"Hmm... I'm thinking of getting LASIK surgery.

I wonder if there are any good places to go to. Maybe I should search on the internet and go where people recommend!"

Have you had thoughts like this?
While it can be good to consider reviews from other people found on the internet when selecting an eye clinic...

In reality, those who write reviews are not doctors, so they may not have detailed knowledge about the intricacies of the surgery.

So, occasionally, when you receive information from various sources, there is a possibility of accepting incorrect information.

To prevent such unfortunate incidents, I, as a current practicing ophthalmologist, would like to provide assistance on "Two Methods for Selecting a LASIK Surgery Clinic."

Oh, by the way, I am a chief ophthalmologist and the director of an eye clinic located in Gangnam. (Ophthalmologists make up only 0.04% of doctors.)
Furthermore, I have a background as a clinical professor at the renowned Catholic University of Korea's St. Mary's Hospital, which is considered one of the top institutions in the field of ophthalmology. I hope you can trust and read my advice.

There is so much I want to share with you that writing a two-day, three-night essay wouldn't be enough. However, I don't want to take up too much of your time, so I will provide you with just two key points.

First, look for LASIK surgery clinics that offer a variety of procedures.

(Here, the term "variety of procedures" includes LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, and PRK, among others.)

Due to the minimal pain and fast recovery, many people express interest in LASIK surgery. However, LASIK surgery involves removing more corneal tissue compared to LASEK, so it may not be suitable for individuals with naturally thin corneas.

Shall we try to figure it out?

If 10 people come to our clinic for vision correction surgery, how many of them would be suitable candidates for LASIK?

8 people? 5 people?

No, only about 1 person.

Of course, it doesn't mean that all the other 9 people cannot have LASIK due to thin corneas.

Even if the corneas are thick, if the patient has high myopia or astigmatism, more corneal tissue needs to be removed compared to the general population.

Therefore, LASIK may not be suitable for individuals with significantly poor vision.

As a result, even if you strongly desire LASIK, you may eventually need to consider LASEK or lens implantation.

That's why I want to emphasize the importance of considering not only LASIK but also LASEK, SMILE, lens implantation, and other various procedures offered by LASIK surgery clinics with a proven track record of successful outcomes.

It is crucial to receive the surgery that is most suitable for you to minimize the chances of regret.

Secondly, verify if the LASIK surgery clinic offers the option of enhancement surgery.

Why did I mention this?

Even after undergoing surgery, did you know that there is a possibility of achieving less-than-desired visual acuity or developing irregular astigmatism, which causes blurry vision?

Moreover, various side effects can occur, such as corneal haze, glare, dry eyes, and regression of vision, as well as the formation of hazy spots on the cornea that obstruct vision.

(Unfortunately, this often leads to a situation where many individuals consider enhancement surgery)

Of course, according to the medical field, the risk of severe side effects is relatively low, around 2-3%, compared to other surgeries.

However, since the timing of such risks is unpredictable, the possibility of enhancement surgery is always available.

(Keep in mind that the patient's post-operative care and management also play a role, even if the initial surgery went well.)

In such cases, if you receive the initial surgery at a clinic that offers the option of enhancement surgery,

the advantage lies in the ability to utilize the information stored by the previous surgical clinic, which can eliminate many unnecessary procedures. (It can also reduce the cost of examinations!)

If you search on the internet, you will find that there aren't as many eye clinics with reoperation centers as you might think.

As a result, many patients who still desire reoperation find themselves unable to receive it, which is quite unfortunate.

I have received numerous inquiries from patients who wish to undergo reoperation, both in person and through blog comments. It saddened me to see that they couldn't easily find a place to receive treatment.

In response to this, I even established a separate reoperation center myself. However, I'm not suggesting that you visit our center specifically.

Since there are many people who undergo LASIK and consider reoperation, I wanted to advise you to also consider the presence of a reoperation center when choosing a LASIK clinic.

I have provided two pieces of advice that could be helpful from a doctor's perspective to those of you who have been researching LASIK clinics.

Sometimes, I hear people questioning, "What kind of person is the director to write such a post?" So, I would like to share a post that includes information about me and my background for those who are curious.

Feel free to read it if you're interested. ^^

You're welcome! If you have any more questions or need further assistance in the future, feel free to ask. Take care and best of luck with your endeavors!
