Read so many Korea clear LASIK reviews and complaints that you can't tell whether the dry eyes and night halos people mention will happen to you, thousands of miles from home? Read this before you message any clinic. You'll know which complaints hold up medically, how the exam and surgery day run, which method each complaint points to, what decides the cost and what recovery looks like, so you can pick a plan that fits your eyes and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic, an ophthalmology specialist from Catholic Medical Center whose field is the cornea. Here the same surgeon handles your exam, your Clear SMILE LASIK and your aftercare, English interpreters sit in on the consultation, and international patients pay the same price as Korean patients.
I'm writing this because most of the complaints people post trace back to decisions made before the laser ever starts, and those decisions are ones you can ask about.
Complaints about Clear LASIK in Korea mostly fall into three groups: dry eyes, halos at night, and feeling rushed or upsold. The first two are real and usually temporary, and the measurements taken before surgery predict much of them. The third is something you can check before you book.
If one complaint you read is the reason you're hesitating, send a screenshot of it on WhatsApp with a photo of your current glasses or contact lens prescription, and ask whether it applies to eyes like yours.
Which Korea clear LASIK complaints hold up medically?
The search people type is Clear LASIK; on our menu the procedure is called Clear SMILE LASIK. A laser shapes a thin, lens-shaped piece of tissue inside the cornea, sized to your prescription, and that tissue is removed through one small incision at the edge. Removing it changes the curve of the cornea. Most complaints about it are worth sorting into what medicine supports and what it doesn't.
Dry eyes after surgery: true for many people, usually for weeks to a few months. Because Clear SMILE LASIK keeps more of the corneal structure and nerves, dry eye after surgery is relatively less likely than with standard LASIK. Less likely is still possible, and anyone whose contacts already feel dry by evening should expect to use drops for a while.
Halos and starbursts at night: true in the early weeks, and they usually fade as the cornea heals. Pupil size matters here. A pupil that opens wide in the dark reaches past the treated zone, which is why that measurement deserves attention before surgery.
Vision hazier than expected on day one: true for some people. With this kind of procedure, the first day can look a little soft, and it usually sharpens over the following days. It is a reason to keep the next-day check-up, not a sign that something failed.
Vision drifting back over the years: possible, and not common for most stable prescriptions. If it happens, a second treatment is sometimes an option depending on the cornea left. The clinic runs a dedicated revision center for people whose vision declined or became uncomfortable after earlier surgery.
Feeling rushed, or pushed toward a pricier option: this one is about the process, not the laser. Ask who examines you, who operates, and whether the same person sees you the next day. Not pushing more than you need is my principle, and when your eyes show few higher-order aberrations, I'd tell you that a custom design adds little. How the consultation and surgery day run
The schedule is short: exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon, check-up the next day. If your exam results allow it, the whole process fits into two days. Exam results can change the plan, so a 2–3 day stay gives you slack, and the exact days are worth confirming at consultation along with how long to stop wearing contact lenses beforehand.
The morning is about measurement. A pre-op exam for laser correction looks at corneal thickness and shape, the map of the corneal surface, pupil size in dim light, the tear film, and any early signs of keratoconus, a condition where the cornea gradually thins and bulges. Every laser setting is based on your own exam data. Afterward we review your results together in your own language, with an interpreter, and you decide only once your questions are answered.
One question I'd want you to think about before that conversation: how many hours a day you spend on screens, and how often you drive after dark. Those two answers change how much the tear film and the pupil reading matter.
In the afternoon, numbing drops go in, and the procedure takes about 10 minutes for both eyes. Most people describe pressure and a bright light rather than pain. You rest briefly, then go back to your hotel; the partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu. The next morning, the first check-up decides whether everything looks as it should.
The clinic sits a minute's walk from Sinnonhyeon Station. Weekday hours run 10:00–18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday until 14:00, with Sundays and holidays closed. That makes Saturday a tight day for surgery, since the check-up can't fall on Sunday.
Which method does your complaint point to?
If Clear SMILE LASIK isn't right for you, I'll say so clearly and explain the alternatives. These are the options on our menu and the complaint each one tends to answer.
Clear SMILE LASIK suits a cornea of adequate thickness and a stable prescription, with most people back to daily life in 1–2 days. Personal Custom LASIK maps higher-order aberrations across the whole eye and is designed with night vision and contrast in mind; it fits people who drive at night often or who are sensitive to glare, as long as the cornea is thick and stable enough.
For a cornea that's too thin, a surface method such as LASEK or a lens implanted inside the eye (ICL) may be safer to compare. LASEK brings a few more uncomfortable days early on, and ICL is an operation inside the eye whose lens position and eye pressure need monitoring. If you're confused by the names on Korean menus, I sort them out in what each Clear SMILE LASIK name means.
Say you're 30, around -5.00 with mild astigmatism, and your contacts feel like sandpaper by 6 pm. You drive home after late shifts, and the complaints that frighten you are about dryness and halos. Here's how I'd reason. If your tear film breaks up quickly, I'd treat the dry eye first, since operating on an unstable tear film makes both complaints more likely.
Then I'd look at pupil size and aberrations: if they're unremarkable, Clear SMILE LASIK is a reasonable fit; if aberrations are pronounced, Personal Custom LASIK enters the conversation; if the cornea is thin, we'd talk about ICL instead.
What does recovery look like in the first days?
On surgery day, expect some watering, a foreign-body feeling and light sensitivity for a few hours. Most people are back to daily life in 1–2 days, and vision keeps sharpening over the following weeks. The US Food and Drug Administration advises not rubbing your eyes after surgery and keeping your follow-up visits, which is also what the next-day check-up is for.
Drops follow a schedule for several weeks. Screens are fine in moderation early on, but dryness shows up most after long sessions, so take breaks. Swimming, hot tubs and eye makeup wait for as long as your surgeon advises. The day-by-day detail is in LASIK in Korea recovery time.
What decides the cost of Clear SMILE LASIK for you?
The method is the first factor: Clear SMILE LASIK, Personal Custom LASIK, LASEK and ICL are priced differently. The detailed pre-op exam is charged separately from surgery. If your exam shows dry eye that should be treated first, that care adds to the plan. Your nights in Seoul are the last piece. International patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay.
The treatment menu is listed on Healing Eye Clinic's English homepage, and exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam. To get a figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for the method you're considering, and mention whether you have astigmatism.
Risks and side effects to know
Common and usually temporary: dryness, glare and halos at night, light sensitivity and vision that fluctuates through the day. These tend to ease over weeks to a few months. Less common: a result slightly under or over the target, which may need glasses for some tasks or a later enhancement. Rare but serious: infection, significant inflammation, or a weakening and bulging of the cornea in eyes that weren't suited to laser correction in the first place. Recovery differs from person to person.
The US Food and Drug Administration lists several reasons laser vision correction may not suit you, including a prescription that's still changing, thin corneas, large pupils, dry eyes, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. As general medicine, progressing keratoconus and severe dry eye are also reasons to postpone surgery or stabilize the eyes first.
After you fly home, severe pain, a sudden drop in vision, or discharge from the eye mean seeing a local eye doctor the same day. Carry a copy of your surgery record, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests for any medical travel, and message the clinic too. If someone in your family reads Korean, the Clear LASIK page on our Korean site is worth sharing with them.
Send a photo of your current prescription and the one complaint you'd most like answered for your eyes. When you come to Seoul, I examine your eyes, we go through the results together with an interpreter, and I recommend the method that fits them.
Frequently asked questions
Do foreigners pay more for Clear SMILE LASIK in Korea?
No. International patients pay exactly the same price as Korean patients. The amount for your case is confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam.
Is the pre-op exam included in the surgery price?
The detailed pre-op exam is charged separately from the surgery. It's also the step that decides whether Clear SMILE LASIK, another method, or no surgery suits your eyes.
Can I have the exam and surgery on the same trip?
Yes, if your results allow it: exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon and a check-up the next day. A 2–3 day stay leaves room if the exam changes the plan; confirm the days at consultation.
What if my vision drifts back years later?
It's possible, though most stable prescriptions hold. A second treatment may be an option depending on the cornea remaining. The clinic runs a dedicated revision center for vision that declined after earlier surgery.
Does Clear SMILE LASIK hurt?
Numbing drops are used, and most people feel pressure and a bright light rather than pain. A gritty, watery feeling for a few hours afterward is common, and it usually settles by the next day.
