Korea custom lasik eye surgery: who it suits, who it doesn't

Korea custom lasik eye surgery is LASIK planned from a map of your eye's higher-order aberrations as well as your glasses prescription. It suits people with a stable prescription, enough corneal thickness and a real complaint about glare or halos at night. If you have a recent prescription card or eye exam report, send a photo on WhatsApp together with the dates you're considering.
I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, with a background in cornea, glaucoma and cataract. At our clinic one dedicated surgeon follows you from the first exam through surgery and aftercare, so the doctor who reads your corneal map is the doctor who checks you the next morning.
What does custom LASIK add to standard LASIK?
Custom LASIK adds a second layer of measurement. A standard plan corrects the myopia and astigmatism on your prescription; the custom plan also reads the fine irregularities in how your eye focuses light and builds them into the laser profile, with night vision and contrast sensitivity in mind.
Two eyes with the same -3.00 prescription can focus light differently. That difference is what people describe as halos around headlights or washed-out contrast in dim rooms. The laser step is brief, and both eyes usually take about ten minutes. Numbing drops are used, with no injection, and most people feel only a mild sense of pressure.
The method is the same family as the LASIK I explain on the Clear LASIK page: a thin flap is made, the cornea underneath is reshaped with an excimer laser, and the flap is repositioned. What changes is how detailed the design is.
Who does Korea custom lasik eye surgery suit?
In short, it suits people whose complaint is the quality of vision, not only the number. Typical examples are frequent night drivers, people bothered by glare, halos or starbursts in the dark, and people whose work demands sharp detail, such as design or video editing.
The cornea has to be stable, well shaped and thick enough for a flap-based approach, and the prescription should fall within the standard LASIK range. Detailed testing also needs to show pronounced higher-order aberrations. When it doesn't, standard LASIK or LASEK may give an excellent result alone, and I sometimes won't recommend custom design at all.
Who should compare SMILE, ICL or surface treatment first?
People with thin corneas, very high prescriptions, keratoconus signs or frequent eye impact should compare other methods before settling on a flap-based LASIK. The table shows the usual comparisons, and the exam decides which row is yours.
| Your eye or lifestyle | Option to compare | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Thin cornea or uneven topography | LASEK or ICL | Avoids a flap or leaves corneal tissue alone |
| Very high myopia | ICL | An implantable lens that doesn't reshape the cornea |
| Contact sports or frequent eye impact | LASEK or SMILE | Flapless approaches may suit better |
| Little higher-order aberration | Standard LASIK | Custom design adds little |
SMILE works through a 2 to 4 mm micro-incision, and its lower surface disruption is why it comes up for people worried about dryness. If you're weighing the options side by side, my notes in Laser Eye Surgery in Korea: 3 Routes, and When to Skip Them cover the routes, and if you were told no at home, How to Find the Best LASIK Clinic in Korea lists the questions worth asking.
What does the exam measure before anyone says yes?
The exam measures corneal thickness, corneal topography, pupil size, tear film and prescription stability.
The results and surgical plan are explained with an interpreter in English, Japanese or Traditional Chinese, so you understand them before deciding. Hold off if your prescription is still changing, if dry eye is significant, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. The FDA's guidance on who should not have LASIK lists similar reasons to wait or to choose differently.
How many days to stop wearing contact lenses beforehand is confirmed at consultation, so don't guess from forum posts.
What are the risks, and what happens after you fly home?
The common effects are temporary dryness, a foreign-body sensation and some night glare in the first weeks. Less often, vision drifts over the years and may need an enhancement. Rare flap-related problems and infection are the serious ones, which is why drops and follow-up checks matter.
On the day of surgery, expect dryness or slight tearing for a few hours, and don't rub your eyes. Most people see clearly from the next day and are back to daily life within one to two days, though recovery varies and the first one to two weeks call for drops on schedule, no eye makeup, saunas or swimming. The same surgeon checks you the next day.
The CDC's medical tourism guidance tells travelers to plan follow-up care before leaving home. Our step-by-step guide to aftercare at home after laser eye surgery in Korea covers what to watch and what to bring to a local eye doctor. If you're unhappy after surgery elsewhere, we run a dedicated revision center; see LASIK revision surgery in Korea for what the exam must show.
This is the section where a photo of your exam report helps most. Send your latest prescription or topography printout on WhatsApp, and note the one risk that worries you most, so you know which part to ask about.
How many days should you plan in Seoul?
Exam and surgery can often happen on the same visit, though your eyes may call for adjustments, so don't book a tight flight before the exam confirms the plan.
The clinic is a one-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station at 470 Gangnam-daero and about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport. Hours are Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, closed Sundays and holidays, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. A partner hotel, O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu, is available.
If you're coming alone, what you can do on a laser eye surgery solo trip to Korea and the wider guide to medical tourism for eye surgery in Korea cover the practical side. A relative who reads Korean can also read the clinic's own Korean-language Clear LASIK page.
Your next step
Open WhatsApp and send two things: a photo of your latest prescription or eye exam report, and the travel dates you're considering. Add one question, such as whether night glare, thin corneas or a past LASIK is your main concern. With your numbers in hand, you can read this page against your own eyes and decide whether to book the detailed exam in Gangnam.
Frequently asked questions
Is custom LASIK the same as wavefront LASIK?
Personal Custom LASIK is the wavefront-type approach. It analyzes higher-order aberrations across the whole eye and designs the correction around them, including night vision and contrast sensitivity.
Can I have custom LASIK with thin corneas?
Thin or irregular corneas often make flap-based LASIK a poorer fit. LASEK or an implantable lens (ICL), which doesn't reshape the cornea, are usually compared first, and the corneal measurements at the exam decide.
Will custom LASIK remove night glare completely?
No procedure can promise that. Custom design is built with night vision in mind, but some glare or halos can appear early on and usually improve with time. Your pupil size and corneal map shape how likely this is.
Can I fly home right after surgery?
Recovery is quick, and most people see clearly the next day. Still, allow time for the exam, the surgery and the next-day check with the same surgeon, and confirm your flight date at that check.
What if I already had LASIK and am not happy with the result?
The clinic runs a dedicated revision center for patients whose vision declined or became uncomfortable after surgery elsewhere. The exam looks for the root cause before any plan is made.
