Trying to work out Korea personal custom LASIK cost before you commit to a long-haul flight, when you're past 40 and not sure the custom design is worth paying for? Read this before you book anything. You'll know what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, how the methods differ and what recovery looks like, so you can tell whether custom design fits your eyes and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, and my specialty is the cornea, glaucoma and cataract. Here one dedicated doctor stays with you from the exam through surgery and aftercare, international patients pay the same price as Korean patients, and interpreters in English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese are on site for the consultation.
I wrote this because many people treat "custom" as a premium tier every eye should get. In my view it only earns its cost when your exam shows aberrations worth correcting.
What you pay for Personal Custom LASIK in Seoul is set by your exam: how much higher-order aberration your eyes show, how much of it the design has to cover, and whether your cornea or your age points to a different method altogether. Where you're from doesn't change it, because the price is the same for everyone.
If you have your latest glasses prescription, send a photo of it on WhatsApp with one question: does my prescription suggest custom design is worth it for me? You'll be asking about your own numbers instead of reading a generic price list.
What does the custom design actually add?
Standard LASIK corrects your prescription, meaning the myopia and astigmatism in your glasses, using a standard pattern. Personal Custom LASIK adds a second layer: the higher-order aberrations, the small irregularities that make every eye bend light a little differently. Two eyes that both measure -3.00 D can still focus light on the retina in different ways, and that difference shows up as glare, halos and lost contrast after dark.
To read those differences, a wavefront analyzer and corneal topography measure how light passes through your eye at hundreds of points. The resulting aberration map becomes the plan the excimer laser follows. That's why the measurement, and the person reading it, matter as much as the machine.
Next to your prescription, the number I'd want to see is your pupil size in dim light. Large pupils are closely tied to night glare, so they shape the design. If the map shows little higher-order aberration, I'll tell you that standard LASIK or LASEK may do the job and custom design isn't worth paying for. Not pushing more treatment than you need is the principle I work by.
What decides Korea personal custom LASIK cost for your eyes
Five things move the figure, and most of them only become clear once your eyes are measured.
- Whether custom design is the right method at all. If your cornea is thin, your prescription is very high or topography shows irregularity, the comparison shifts to SMILE or an implantable lens (ICL), and those sit on different lines of the price list.
- How much the design has to cover. The cost of custom LASIK changes with your exam results and the scope of the design, so there isn't one fixed figure for it.
- Your age. From the early-to-mid 40s, most people start losing near focus. The price list carries separate presbyopic versions of LASIK and LASEK, so if reading without glasses is part of the conversation, the method and the cost change with it.
- The detailed exam and any add-ons. For SMILE-type Clear LASIK the detailed pre-op exam is charged separately, so ask whether the same applies to your quote. The price list also shows separate lines for items such as corneal cross-linking and autologous serum; ask which, if any, are in your plan.
- Your days in Seoul. Flights and hotel nights belong in your budget too. The clinic has a partner hotel, O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu.
Nationality is not on that list. International and Korean patients pay the same price. If you want the wider picture of what a LASIK quote here covers, I've written about LASIK cost in Korea.
Exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam. Before that, you can ask on WhatsApp what Personal Custom LASIK would cost for your case and attach a photo of any recent exam printout you have, such as corneal thickness or topography, so the question is about your eyes and not an average.
Say you're 46 and dread driving home after dark
Say you live in Sydney, you're 46, your glasses read about -4.25 with some astigmatism, and the winter drive home is the part of the day you dread because oncoming headlights smear. You've also started holding your phone a little farther away.
With you, I'd look at three things before cost comes up. First, the aberration map and your pupil size in dim light: if higher-order aberrations are pronounced and your pupils are large, custom design has a real job to do. Second, corneal thickness and topography, which decide whether a LASIK approach is safe at all. Third, your near vision. At 46, correcting distance fully usually means reading glasses for close work, and some people would rather plan for that from the start.
Each answer moves the plan. Low aberrations point toward standard LASIK or LASEK. A thin or irregular cornea points toward SMILE or ICL. A strong wish to read without glasses opens the presbyopic options. The cost follows the plan, never the other way round.
What do reviews get right about custom LASIK?
Review threads tend to repeat three claims, and they hold up to different degrees.
"Custom LASIK gets rid of halos." Partly. Because the design also addresses higher-order aberrations, it can help reduce glare at night. How much you notice depends on your pupil size and the state of your eyes, though, and no surgeon can promise every halo will disappear.
"Custom is always the better buy." This one doesn't hold. Eyes with little higher-order aberration often do well with standard LASIK or LASEK, and paying for a design with little to correct adds cost without adding much.
"You're back at work the next day." Often close. Most people return to daily life within one to two days, but the US Food and Drug Administration's patient guidance describes discomfort, blurriness and dryness in the early period, so plan screen-heavy days with that in mind. I've answered more of these in five Reddit questions about LASIK in Korea.
Methods that may come up instead
The exam often ends with a comparison rather than a single answer. These are the options on the menu that come up most often alongside custom design.
| Method | Often considered when |
|---|---|
| Standard LASIK or LASEK | Your prescription is in the usual range and the aberration map is unremarkable |
| Personal Custom LASIK | Higher-order aberrations are pronounced, you're sensitive to night glare, and the cornea is thick and stable |
| SMILE | Your cornea suits laser correction and you prefer correction through one small incision |
| ICL (implantable lens) | The prescription is very high or the cornea is too thin for laser; the lens sits inside the eye and the cornea isn't reshaped |
| Presbyopic LASIK or LASEK | You're over 40 and near vision matters to you |
Implanted lenses carry their own risks. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's assessment of phakic lenses lists cataract and raised eye pressure among them, so ICL is a trade, not a shortcut. You can read more on the Personal Custom LASIK page, and on the clinic's Korean-language LASIK page. If LASIK turns out not to suit you, what to do when LASIK is a no covers the next steps.
How long is recovery, and how many days in Seoul?
The operation takes about ten minutes for both eyes. Numbing drops go in just before, and most people feel pressure rather than pain. The aberration measurements make the exam a little longer than a standard LASIK work-up.
Plan your days around the exam, the surgery and a check-up the next day, and confirm the exact number of days in your consultation, because exam results can change the plan. The clinic is a one-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station and about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport. It's open Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and closed on Sundays and public holidays.
After you fly home, your progress is followed by video call or messenger.
Risks and side effects to know
The common early effects are dry or gritty eyes, vision that fluctuates through the day, and glare or halos at night. The American Academy of Ophthalmology lists dry eye and glare among the more frequent side effects of LASIK, and for many people they settle over weeks to months. Less often, under- or over-correction, problems with the corneal flap or infection can need further treatment.
The FDA's guidance on when LASIK is not for you points the same way as my own cautions. Wait, or choose another method, if your prescription is still changing, you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you have severe dry eye, or your cornea is thin or irregular, including early signs of keratoconus. Before any custom design, corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, tear film, the cornea left after correction and keratoconus warning signs are all assessed.
If your eyes become painful or red, or your vision drops suddenly after you're home, see a local ophthalmologist that day and message the clinic on WhatsApp so your dedicated doctor knows. Healing differs from one person to the next, and that is why the follow-up continues after you leave Seoul.
When you're ready, message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates and the one thing you most want to know, whether that's the night glare, the reading glasses or the figure itself. When you come in, I'll examine your eyes and recommend the method that fits them, custom or not.
Frequently asked questions
Do international patients pay more for Personal Custom LASIK in Seoul?
No. All prices apply equally to Korean and international patients. Your quote changes with your exam results and the scope of the design, not with your nationality.
Is the detailed eye exam included in the quote?
For SMILE-type Clear LASIK, the detailed pre-op exam is charged separately. Ask on WhatsApp whether the same applies to a Personal Custom LASIK quote for your case.
Does Personal Custom LASIK hurt?
Numbing eye drops go in just before surgery, with no injection. Most people feel some pressure rather than pain, and the procedure takes about ten minutes for both eyes.
Will custom design stop the halos I see when driving at night?
It can help reduce night glare because the design also addresses higher-order aberrations. How much depends on your pupil size and eye condition, and no one can promise every halo disappears.
What if my eyes turn out not to suit LASIK?
Then I'll say so and explain the alternatives. Depending on your cornea and prescription, that could be LASEK, SMILE or an implantable lens (ICL), each with its own trade-offs.
