Worried that a Korea clear LASIK consultation booking appointment locks you into surgery, and that you'll fly to Seoul only to hear no? Read this before you buy a ticket. You'll know what a booking commits you to, what decides the cost, what reviews get right, and which methods remain if one is ruled out, so you can plan around your corneas and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, specializing in cornea, glaucoma and cataract. We perform Clear SMILE LASIK with one dedicated surgeon from exam to aftercare, English interpreters on site, and the same prices for international and Korean patients.
I'm writing this because people told "borderline" at home often treat the appointment as the verdict, when it's where the measuring starts.
The short answer: a booking holds time for your exam and consultation. Surgery goes ahead only if your results allow it, and those results can point to a different method.
If "borderline" is the word that's been following you, send a photo of your latest prescription on WhatsApp and ask one thing: "If Clear SMILE is ruled out, what's still possible for me?" You'll have that question on record before you've spent anything on flights.
Does booking a consultation mean you've agreed to surgery?
A Korea clear LASIK consultation booking appointment is easy to misread, because one phrase covers three separate things. There's your first message, the pre-exam consultation that covers candidacy, cost and schedule, and the detailed exam in Seoul. None of them is the operation.
You can also send any exam records or photos you already have, and we can give a first opinion on suitability by video or online consultation. That opinion comes from your records, so it has limits. The fuller answer comes from around 20 tests, after which your surgeon goes through the results and plan with you through an interpreter. This walkthrough of a consultation in Korea covers that conversation in more detail.
I don't recommend a surgery for its own sake. If Clear SMILE LASIK isn't right for your eyes, I'll say so clearly and explain the alternatives. You may also see this procedure called Clear LASIK or Clear SMILE in different places, so here's what each of those names means.
Why "borderline" at home doesn't settle it for Seoul
A laser correction removes corneal tissue, and the stronger the prescription, the more it generally removes. So the word "borderline" usually hides two questions: how much cornea will remain afterward, and whether its shape looks healthy on topography. Those are measurements, and they can be repeated.
Doctors can read the same eye differently because the methods differ. A cornea that's marginal for one method may still be open to another, and a lens-based option leaves corneal shape alone. The US FDA's guidance also flags thin corneas, large pupils and dry eyes as reasons someone may be a poor LASIK candidate, so a cautious answer from your surgeon at home deserves respect.
Which methods could come up at your appointment?
| Method | What it does | When it comes up |
|---|---|---|
| Clear SMILE LASIK | Removes a lenticule through one small incision | Stable myopia or astigmatism, active life |
| Personal Custom LASIK | Laser correction designed from an aberration map | Thick, well-shaped cornea, night-glare concerns |
| Perfect Healing LASEK | Laser correction at the corneal surface | Thin cornea or some irregularity |
| ICL | Implanted lens, cornea isn't reshaped | Very high myopia or thin cornea |
Every alternative has its own trade-off. Surface treatment usually heals more slowly than the other laser methods, so it can take more of your trip. ICL is intraocular surgery, and the FDA lists risks such as cataract and raised eye pressure for phakic lenses.
If you have a corneal thickness printout from home, send a photo of it on WhatsApp and ask which of these four methods is still worth discussing for you. It gives you a specific question to compare against what you were told at home.
Six questions to ask before you confirm a date
In short, these work for any clinic you're considering. Where I can answer for ours, I have.
- How long before the exam should I stop my contact lenses? Lenses can change corneal shape, and the FDA advises stopping before the evaluation. The length varies by lens type, so confirm yours at the consultation.
- Is the detailed exam charged separately? With us, it is.
- If the exam rules out surgery, what happens to my booking and any deposit? Get this answer before you pay for anything.
- Will the same surgeon examine me and operate? Here, one dedicated surgeon covers your exam, surgery and follow-ups.
- Who explains my results, and in which language? We have English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese interpreters on site.
- What happens once I'm home? You can check in with us by email or video call, and we provide a referral letter if you need local care. We also prescribe enough post-op medication to take home and explain the ingredients.
The US CDC's medical tourism advice points the same way: plan follow-up care before you travel and keep copies of your records. For the broader decisions around the trip, see what I tell international LASIK patients first.
Which day should you book around your flights?
Our hours are Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:30, Friday 10:00 to 21:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and holidays. The shortest Clear SMILE plan puts the exam and surgery on one day and the check-up on the next. A Saturday, or the day before a holiday, leaves no open clinic the next day, so raise that before you choose one.
Say you've been told you're borderline at about -7.50 and you have five days of leave. You land on Tuesday, and the clinic is about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport and one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station. Wednesday morning is your exam. If the results allow it, surgery follows that afternoon and the check-up on Thursday. Flying is allowed from the day after surgery, once that check-up is done.
That plan still leaves spare days, and at that prescription I'd want them. The exam could point toward ICL or LASEK, and those don't necessarily fit the same calendar. So ask how many days each option would need, and buy a ticket you can change. For a more relaxed Clear SMILE trip, we suggest 2 to 3 days.
Our partner hotel is the O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu, and the rest of our contact details are on Healing Eye Clinic's English site. To picture the visit itself, read about what each room in a Korean LASIK clinic is for.

What decides the cost of Clear LASIK in Korea?
The final cost is confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam, and five things move it for you:
- the method your exam points to, since Clear SMILE LASIK, LASIK or LASEK and ICL are priced separately
- whether you need a presbyopic version
- the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately
- whether a lens-based option needs a toric lens for astigmatism
- your days in Seoul, which affect your own hotel and travel budget
International patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. For the figure that applies to you, ask on WhatsApp what your case would cost, with your prescription attached.
What do reviews get right about booking?
Three claims turn up in review threads about Korean clinics, and each is partly right.
"You can have the exam and surgery on the same day." That's possible, and it's our shortest plan. What the reviews leave out is the condition: your results have to allow it, and recent contact lens wear can affect the measurements.
"Two days is plenty." For Clear SMILE, it can be, because exam, surgery and check-up can fit into two days. It doesn't hold if your exam points to another method, and a tight trip leaves no room for that.
"Clinics in Korea will say yes to anyone." Medically, a yes is only as good as the measurements behind it. Whichever clinic you're considering, ask to see your own corneal thickness and topography results and ask why they support the plan.
Who should wait, and what can go wrong
Risks and side effects to know
A foreign-body feeling and light sensitivity are normal on surgery day and usually settle quickly. Dryness can follow any laser vision correction, and vision and the cornea typically enter a stable phase around the first month. Recovery differs from person to person. Less often, the correction may need further attention, or glare and halos may bother you at night. Corneal laser surgery can't be undone.
You should generally put surgery off if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or your prescription is still changing. Severe dry eye may need treatment first. A thin cornea, or topography showing irregularity or signs of keratoconus, may make LASEK or ICL safer than Clear SMILE, and some eyes shouldn't have surgery at all.
If something feels off once you're home, contact us by email or video call. Sudden pain, redness or a drop in vision needs an eye doctor promptly, so see one locally and take your referral letter and records with you.

What to put in your first message
Send your travel dates on WhatsApp, along with the one question you most want answered. A relative who reads Korean can also look through our Korean-language Clear LASIK page with you. When you come to Seoul, your surgeon will examine your eyes and recommend the method that fits them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send my eye records before I book anything?
Yes. Send any exam records or photos you have, and we can give a first opinion on suitability by video or online consultation. The detailed exam in Seoul then provides the full measurements.
Do I need to speak Korean at the appointment?
No. English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese interpreters are on site, and everything from the exam and surgery to aftercare is explained in your language.
When do I stop wearing contacts before the exam?
Contact lenses can change the shape of the cornea, so you'll need to stop them before the exam. The length varies by lens type, so confirm the timing for your lenses at the consultation.
What methods are there besides Clear SMILE LASIK?
We also offer Personal Custom LASIK, Perfect Healing LASEK and ICL. Which one suits you comes from your exam data and how you live, and each has its own risks and recovery.
Can I fly home the day after surgery?
After Clear SMILE LASIK, flying is allowed from the day after surgery. Have your next-day check-up first so your surgeon can confirm everything is fine, and use artificial tears often because cabin air is dry.
