Worried that a Korea Clear LASIK consultation booking fee will tie up your money before you fly all that way, only for the exam to say no? Read this before you pay anything to hold a date.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, and my specialty is cornea, glaucoma and cataract. For Clear LASIK, one dedicated surgeon stays with you from exam to aftercare, on-site interpreters work in English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese, and international patients pay the same as Korean patients.
I'm writing this because people often treat the consultation, the exam and the surgery as one bill, then plan their money and their flights around the wrong number.
If a payment to hold a date comes up, get the terms before you pay.
To start, send a photo of your latest glasses or contact lens prescription on WhatsApp and ask one thing: does my date need anything paid in advance?
Is there a fee to book the consultation?
When people look up a Korea Clear LASIK consultation booking fee, they usually mean one of three things: a charge for asking questions, a charge for the medical exam, or a payment that holds a surgery date. Those are separate, and only the first two have a clear answer on our published pages.
| Step | What it covers | Charged? |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed pre-op exam | Around 20 tests, then your results and plan explained with an interpreter | Charged separately |
| Surgery | The method chosen from your exam data | Exact cost confirmed after the exam |
| Payment to hold a date | Ask for the terms on WhatsApp | Ask before you pay |
What if the exam says no after I've paid for it?
In short, that can happen, which is why the exam deserves a line in your budget of its own. It can't tell me how thick your cornea is, whether its shape is regular, how stable your tear film is, or how large your pupils are.
A cornea that's thin or irregular, or one showing signs of keratoconus, can turn a Clear LASIK plan into a talk about LASEK or ICL. Severe dry eye may need treating first. If you'd like to see the reasoning, I've written about what a Seoul surgeon checks first.
Contact lenses matter here too. The US Food and Drug Administration tells lens wearers to stop before the baseline evaluation, because lenses can change the shape of the cornea. Confirm the number of days for your lens type at consultation, so you don't measure a cornea that hasn't settled.
Say you're about -4.00, your prescription has held for over a year, you wear contacts, and you have five days off from Los Angeles. I'd count the exam as your first real expense and keep your flights changeable until the schedule is confirmed. If your map came back irregular, I'd want that conversation about alternatives before anything else, and your trip would still have told you something a prescription never could.
If you already have a corneal thickness printout or an exam report from home, add a photo of it to your WhatsApp message and ask whether the exam charge is still due when surgery turns out not to fit.

Clear LASIK methods and who each one suits
On our price list, Clear LASIK appears as Clear SMILE LASIK. The laser shapes a thin lens of tissue inside the cornea, which is removed through one small incision. It tends to suit myopia or myopic astigmatism with a prescription stable for about a year, active jobs and sports, and people who want a quick return to daily life. The names get confusing across clinics, so here's what each Clear SMILE name means.
Personal Custom LASIK uses a thin flap with the laser correction underneath, and it adds your eye's higher-order aberrations to the design. It makes sense when night glare bothers you and testing shows pronounced aberrations. When your aberrations are small, I may not recommend it at all.
Perfect Healing LASEK works on the corneal surface and can come up when the cornea is thin, though early healing is usually slower and less comfortable. ICL places a lens inside the eye without reshaping the cornea and may suit very high myopia. The FDA lists cataract and raised eye pressure among the risks of this type of lens.
If your vision declined or became uncomfortable after surgery elsewhere, our dedicated revision center works from a detailed exam first, and duration and recovery vary by case.
What decides the cost of Clear LASIK in Korea?
Five things move the figure for your case, and all of them become clearer once your eyes are measured:
- The exam: the detailed pre-op exam is its own line.
- Your correction: astigmatism or very high myopia can change which method and lens fit.
- Days in Seoul: a plan of 2–3 days costs more in hotel nights than the shortest one. Our partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu.
Exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam, and all prices apply equally to local and international patients. Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, with your prescription attached.
What reviews get right and wrong about fees
Thread claims about fees are often half right. "A price quoted by message is final" also runs ahead of the facts, because a correction plan can change once the cornea is measured.
"Foreigners pay more" is something I can answer only for us: the price is the same here. "You can do it all in two days" is possible when exam results allow it, though results can change the plan. For more of these, see the Reddit questions a surgeon answers.
If a parent or partner helping with the decision reads Korean, they can read the Clear LASIK page on our Korean site.
Recovery: how many days should I block out?
The shortest Clear SMILE LASIK plan is 1 night, 2 days: exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon, check-up the next day. We suggest 2–3 days for a more relaxed trip, and the exact schedule is set in your consultation.
Here's the usual course. On surgery day, vision starts recovering, with some foreign-body feeling or light sensitivity. Day 1 is your first check-up, and indoor activities are fine. By days 2–3, vision is mostly stable and light outings are fine. Most daily routines are back by week 1, and vision and cornea enter a stable phase around month 1. LASEK and ICL follow different timelines, so don't borrow these days for them.
Flying is allowed from the day after surgery, once the check-up is done. Cabin air is dry, so use artificial tears often.
Check our hours against your flights. We're open Mon–Thu 10:00–18:30, Fri 10:00–21:00 and Sat 10:00–14:00, with lunch 13:00–14:00, and we're closed Sundays and holidays. That matters for one reason: surgery the day before a closure leaves no next-day check-up on the calendar, so ask about those dates before you book.
Risks and side effects to know
Foreign-body feeling, light sensitivity and dryness are common early on and usually settle. Glare or halos at night can also appear. Less often, people need further correction, and infection or corneal problems are rare but serious. Results and healing differ from person to person.
As general medicine, it's usually wise to wait or rethink if your prescription is still changing, you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you have severe dry eye, or your cornea is thin or irregular. The FDA's LASIK guidance also lists an unstable prescription as a reason to hold off.
Once you're home, you can check in with us by email or video call, and we provide a referral letter if you need local care. Before you leave, we prescribe enough post-op medication to take home and explain the ingredients. The US CDC's medical tourism guidance also advises arranging follow-up care before you travel, so tell your eye doctor at home your plan. If you get sudden pain or a drop in vision, see a local eye doctor right away, then contact us.

What to send on WhatsApp first
Add your travel month and the question on your mind, such as what the whole trip would cost for your eyes.
When you come to Seoul, your dedicated surgeon examines your eyes, goes through the results with you and an interpreter, and recommends the method that fits your eyes and your life.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go through the exam without speaking Korean?
Yes. Japanese, Traditional Chinese and English interpreters are on site, and your results and surgical plan are explained in your language.
Do international patients pay a different price for Clear LASIK?
No. All prices apply equally to local and international patients. The exact cost for your eyes is confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam.
How can I pay from overseas?
Credit cards, international bank transfer and other methods are accepted, and the details are explained during your consultation.
How long should I stop wearing contact lenses before the exam?
It varies with the lens type, so confirm the number of days at consultation and before you fix your flights. Lenses can change the shape of the cornea, which can affect the measurements.
