Is the Korea Clear LASIK cost in Korea going to change once a surgeon in Seoul measures your corneas, after you've already paid for the flight? Read this before you book it. You'll know what decides the price of Clear SMILE LASIK for your eyes, what reviews get right and wrong, which methods might take its place, and what recovery asks of your trip. Then you can budget for the option your eyes are likely to allow.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director of Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, and my specialty is cornea, glaucoma and cataract. Here, one dedicated surgeon stays with you from the exam through surgery and aftercare, international patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay, and consultations run with interpreters in English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese.
I'm writing this because many people budget for the surgery they want, when the figure that matters is the one for the surgery their corneas allow. If you've already heard "thin" or "high prescription" at home, that gap can be wide.
What you pay for Clear SMILE LASIK here rests on three things: whether your exam confirms it suits your eyes, whether you need the standard or presbyopic version, and the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately. The exact figure is confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after that exam.
If a surgeon at home called your corneas thin, send a photo of that exam printout on WhatsApp and ask which methods are still on the table for numbers like yours.
What decides the Korea Clear LASIK cost in Korea for your eyes?
Five things move the figure for someone flying in. The first is the biggest, and it's the one most budgets leave out.
| Factor | Why it moves the cost | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| The method your exam allows | Clear SMILE, LASIK/LASEK and ICL are separate lines on our price table; Custom LASIK depends on the design range | "If not Clear SMILE, which methods fit my eyes?" |
| Standard or presbyopic version | Presbyopic Clear SMILE LASIK is its own item | "Does my near vision change the plan?" |
| The detailed pre-op exam | Charged separately from the surgery | "Is the exam part of this quote?" |
| A previous operation | Revision is planned only after a detailed exam | "What records from my first surgery should I bring?" |
| Days in Seoul | Hotel nights and time off work add to the trip | "How many nights should I hold?" |
What doesn't move it is your passport: all prices apply equally to local and international patients. If you want the whole trip in one spreadsheet, flights and nights included, budgeting the whole LASIK trip to Korea walks through it, and what a LASIK quote in Korea includes and leaves out helps you read each line.
To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, with a photo of your current prescription attached.
How Clear SMILE works, and why your cornea picks the method
With Clear SMILE, a femtosecond laser shapes a thin, lens-shaped piece of tissue, called a lenticule, inside the cornea, sized to your prescription. It comes out through one small opening at the edge, and the change in corneal curvature corrects myopia and astigmatism. Here it's performed with the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8, and every setting is based on your own pre-op exam data.
For a strong prescription, the part that matters is arithmetic. The more correction you need, the thicker the lenticule, and the less cornea remains afterward. A cornea that starts thin, or a topography map that steepens in one area, leaves less margin. The US Food and Drug Administration lists thin corneas, a prescription that is still changing and large pupils among the reasons LASIK may not be right for someone.
The names cause confusion too. If you've seen Clear LASIK, Clear SMILE and SMILE used for what looks like the same thing, what each Clear SMILE name means in Korea sorts out the labels.
Which methods might take over if your corneas are thin?
Personal Custom LASIK reads higher-order aberrations with a wavefront analyzer and corneal topography and designs the correction around them, with night vision in mind. It needs a cornea that is stable, well shaped and thick enough for the LASIK approach, so it usually isn't where a thin cornea ends up. If your eyes show little higher-order aberration, standard LASIK or LASEK can do well without it.
Perfect Healing LASEK works on the surface of the cornea, which leaves more of its thickness in place. The trade is a slower start: surface treatments generally feel scratchy and blurry for the first few days while the outer layer heals, so the trip may need more slack.
An implantable lens (ICL) corrects vision with a lens placed inside the eye and doesn't reshape the cornea, which is why it comes up for strong prescriptions. Because it is surgery inside the eye, the risks differ; a rise in eye pressure and, over the years, cataract are the ones people are usually counseled about.
Say you're around -8.00 with astigmatism, your contacts dry out by mid-afternoon, and a surgeon at home said your corneas are on the thin side. I wouldn't start with what Clear SMILE costs. I'd start with how much cornea would remain after a correction that strong, then look at the tear film and pupil size. If the remaining cornea is borderline, LASEK or ICL belongs on the table next to Clear SMILE, and you'd budget for the more involved option until the exam settles it.
What do Clear LASIK reviews get right, and what do they miss?
Review threads about laser surgery in Seoul repeat a handful of claims. Some hold up, some only half.
- "The quoted price covers everything." Check this one. Here, the detailed pre-op exam is charged apart from the surgery, and the exact cost is confirmed after it.
- "Foreigners get charged more." Not on our price table, which applies to local and international patients alike.
- "You're back to normal the next day." Partly. Back to daily life in 1 to 2 days is typical for Clear SMILE, but the FDA notes that dryness, glare and fluctuating vision can last weeks to months after laser surgery for some people. Daily life and fully settled vision are different milestones.
- "SMILE means no dry eye." Too strong. Keeping more of the corneal structure and nerves makes dry eye after surgery relatively less likely, but it can still happen.
Recovery and your days in Seoul
If your exam results allow it, the whole sequence fits into two days: the exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon, and a check-up the next day. The surgery itself takes about 10 minutes for both eyes. Exam results can change that plan, so 2 to 3 days is the less hurried version; confirm your exact stay during the consultation.
Map it against the clock before you book. The clinic is open Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:30, Friday until 21:00, and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and closed Sundays and public holidays. Land on a Saturday afternoon and your exam can't happen before Monday, which is one more hotel night to price in. We're a one-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport, and our partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu. The hours and the full price table are also on our English homepage.
Treat the day after surgery as a rest day. General aftercare advice usually includes not rubbing your eyes, keeping water out of them, and using screens in short stretches while the surface settles.
If a parent or partner reads Korean more comfortably, our Korean page on Clear SMILE LASIK covers the same procedure for them.
Once you have travel dates in mind, send them on WhatsApp with the one scheduling question your trip hinges on, such as which weekday to land.
Risks and side effects to know before you budget
In the first days and weeks after laser vision correction, dryness, light sensitivity, glare or halos at night, and vision that shifts through the day are common. For most people they ease over weeks to months, though night glare can linger longer for some, especially with larger pupils.
Who should wait or skip it: anyone whose prescription is still changing, people with severe dry eye or progressing keratoconus, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and corneas too thin for the correction needed. For these, postponing or choosing another method is usually the safer path. The exam that decides this covers corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, tear film and early signs of keratoconus, and whether you're a candidate is settled at that in-person exam.
If, after you fly home, your vision drops suddenly, pain grows instead of easing, or redness and discharge appear, see an ophthalmologist where you are the same day and message us on WhatsApp with what's happening. Keep using your drops on the schedule you were given. If your vision drifts years later, Healing Eye runs a dedicated LASIK/LASEK revision center and a lifetime surgery responsibility system; ask about its terms before you book.
Send a photo of your latest prescription or exam printout with the dates you're considering, and ask: which methods fit numbers like mine, and what would each one cost? When you come to Gangnam, I examine your eyes and recommend the method that fits them and the life you're going back to.

It can. Presbyopic Clear SMILE LASIK is a separate item on the price table. Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, and mention your age and any reading glasses you use.

A second operation follows a different path. Healing Eye has a dedicated LASIK/LASEK revision center, and both the method and the recovery are decided after a detailed exam, so bring any records from your first surgery.
