Worried your Korea Clear LASIK recovery cost will climb once you add hotel nights, lost work days and a check-up before the flight home? Read this before you book anything. You'll know what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, which methods fit which eyes, and how many days to plan, so you can tell which route suits your prescription and budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, and my specialty is cornea, glaucoma and cataract. The procedure you're searching for is listed here as Clear SMILE LASIK. One dedicated doctor stays with you from exam through surgery and aftercare, interpreters for English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese are on site, and international patients pay the same as Korean patients.
I wrote this because many people budget for the operation alone, then learn that the exam result changes the method, and the method changes the trip.
Clear SMILE LASIK removes a thin piece of corneal tissue through one small incision. If your exam allows it, the shortest plan is one night and two days, so the recovery side of your cost comes down to your method, your nights in Seoul and your days off.
If you've been told your corneas are borderline, send a photo of your latest prescription on WhatsApp and ask one thing: "Would my recovery plan change if I needed LASEK or ICL?"
What is Clear LASIK, and who does it suit?
Clear SMILE LASIK corrects myopia and astigmatism by removing a lenticule, a thin lens-shaped piece of tissue, from inside the cornea. A femtosecond laser shapes it and makes one small opening at the edge. Clinics use overlapping names for this family of surgery, so I've set out what each Clear SMILE and LASIK name means in a separate post.
It tends to suit you if your prescription has been stable for about a year and you want to return to normal life quickly. It can also fit if you play sports or already have some dryness.
The cautions matter more when your prescription is strong. A thin cornea, irregular topography or signs of keratoconus can point toward LASEK or ICL, and very high myopia can point toward ICL. If Clear LASIK isn't right for your eyes, I'll say so plainly and explain the alternatives.
How do the methods change your recovery?
Your method sets the recovery plan, so it's the first thing to settle before you price the trip.
| Method | Tends to suit | Recovery plan |
|---|---|---|
| Clear SMILE LASIK | Stable myopia or astigmatism, active lifestyle | Daily life in 1–2 days |
| Personal Custom LASIK | Marked higher-order aberrations, night glare | Daily life in 1–2 days |
| Perfect Healing LASEK | Thin corneas, active lifestyle | 3–5 day recovery care |
| ICL | Very high myopia, cornea unsuited to laser | Confirm at consultation |
Each alternative has its own trade-off. LASEK usually brings more discomfort and slower visual recovery in the first days. ICL places a lens inside the eye and leaves the corneal shape alone, and the US FDA lists possible risks that include cataract and raised eye pressure.
Personal Custom LASIK reads your eye's own aberration map. If your eyes show little higher-order aberration, I may not recommend it at all, because not pushing more than you need is our principle. And if your vision declined after surgery elsewhere, the clinic has a dedicated LASIK/LASEK revision center, where the plan and recovery are decided after a detailed exam.
What decides the Korea Clear LASIK recovery cost?
Five things move this number for your case, and only the first is a surgical decision.
- The method your exam allows. A switch from Clear SMILE LASIK to LASEK or ICL changes both the fee and the time you plan around it.
- The detailed pre-op exam. It is charged separately, so ask for it as its own line.
- Nights in Seoul. Your flight and hotel follow the method. The clinic's partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu.
- Days off work. Unpaid leave belongs in the budget, even though it never appears on a clinic quote.
- Eye care needed first. Severe dry eye may have to be treated before surgery, which can mean a different trip plan.
Exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam. The clinic's price list is on the Healing Eye Clinic English home page, and this guide to comparing SMILE LASIK quotes line by line shows what to check. In your 40s or 50s, near vision adds another decision, which I cover in presbyopia surgery cost by age.
To get your own figure, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, and whether the exam and next-day check-up are counted in that answer.
What reviews get right about recovery
"I was back at work the next day." This is partly true. Normal indoor activity is fine on day 1 for Clear SMILE LASIK, while most daily routines return within the first week. A long day at a screen can feel dry early on, so give yourself room if your job is screen-heavy.
"Two days in Korea is enough." This is true only when the exam clears you on arrival and you've chosen a method with a short recovery. A review can't tell you what your own cornea will show.
"This method doesn't cause dry eye." This one is wrong as written. Dry eye is relatively less likely with Clear SMILE LASIK than with standard LASIK, and it can still happen.
Say your home surgeon called your corneas borderline
Imagine you're at -7.50, your contacts dry out by mid-afternoon, and you have five days of leave. A home surgeon said laser would be tight.
With a prescription that strong, I want to see corneal thickness set against the amount of correction, along with topography and the tear film. A good result begins in the exam room, well before surgery day. If the numbers support Clear SMILE LASIK, your five days are generous. If they point to LASEK, those days have to hold 3–5 days of recovery care. If they point to ICL, confirm the schedule before you commit to a return flight.
How many days should you plan in Seoul?
The shortest Clear SMILE LASIK plan is one night and two days: exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon, check-up the next day. For a more relaxed trip, the suggestion is 2–3 days. Exam results can change this plan, so confirm your exact days at consultation, along with how long to leave your contacts out before the exam.
Flying is allowed from the day after surgery, once the next-day check-up is done. The clinic is about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport and one minute on foot from Sinnonhyeon Station. Friday hours run to 21:00 and Saturday hours end at 14:00. It's closed on Sundays and holidays, so ask how the next-day check-up would work before you choose a Saturday or the eve of a holiday.

After surgery, vision starts recovering right away. It's mostly stable by days 2–3, when light outings are fine, and the cornea enters a stable phase around month one. For the day-to-day detail, see what you can do each day during LASIK recovery in Korea.
When I'd ask you to slow down
A short recovery only helps if the surgery was right for your eyes in the first place.
Risks and side effects to know
A foreign-body feeling and light sensitivity are normal on surgery day. Dryness, and glare or halos at night, can also appear in the first weeks and usually ease with time, though recovery differs from person to person.
These are general reasons to wait or choose another route:
- your prescription is still changing
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- your cornea is thin or irregular, or shows signs of keratoconus
- you have severe dry eye that hasn't been treated
The US FDA's guidance on who shouldn't have LASIK covers similar ground. Laser surgery can make keratoconus worse, which is why that map matters so much to me.
If pain, a sudden drop in vision or increasing redness appears after you fly home, see an ophthalmologist near you promptly and contact the clinic too. The US CDC's medical tourism advice is to carry copies of your records and arrange follow-up care at home before you leave, and that's worth doing this week.
If thickness is your main doubt, send your corneal thickness printout on WhatsApp, along with the reason you were told to be careful.

Your first message can be short
When you come to Seoul, your doctor examines your eyes, goes through the results with you and an interpreter, and recommends the method that fits your eyes and your life.
Frequently asked questions
Do international patients pay more for Clear SMILE LASIK?
No. All prices apply equally to local and international patients. The detailed pre-op exam is charged separately, and exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after that exam.
Can I get my exact cost before I travel?
You can ask on WhatsApp about your case before booking anything. The final figure is confirmed after the detailed exam, because the result can change the method.
Can I fly home the day after surgery?
Flying is allowed from the day after surgery, after your next-day check-up. Cabin air is dry, so use artificial tears often during the flight.
Can I have the exam and surgery without speaking Korean?
Yes. English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese interpreters are on site, and the exam results and surgical plan are explained in your language.
Is Clear SMILE LASIK the same as SMILE?
Both remove a lenticule through a small incision. Clear SMILE at Healing Eye is performed with the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 laser, and which method suits you is decided from your exam data.
