I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, medical director of Healing Eye Clinic in Sinnonhyeon, Gangnam, Seoul. I was a clinical professor of cornea and cataract surgery at a university hospital, and every week I examine patients who have flown in from abroad, with an English interpreter in the room throughout.
Many WhatsApp messages from abroad start the same way: "Dr. Kim, three clinics sent me three different SMILE prices. Which one is real?"
If you're searching smile lasik surgery cost korea, you're probably holding a few numbers already and none of them line up. I understand the frustration — you're trying to plan a trip, and the one figure you need keeps moving.
So let me say it plainly first: I don't publish a single SMILE price, and I'd be cautious of anyone who quotes one before seeing your cornea. What I can give you is how a fair SMILE quote is built, so you can compare the ones you have.
Why is there no fixed SMILE LASIK surgery cost in Korea?
Our published list has fixed prices for LASIK, LASEK, Clear LASIK and ICL. SMILE isn't on it. There are three honest reasons.
1. The plan depends on measurements you haven't had yet
SMILE removes a lens of tissue shaped to your exact prescription and astigmatism. How that is planned depends on your corneal thickness and map.
Ordering a tailored suit by email works the same way: the price is a guess until someone measures you. A SMILE number before the exam is a placeholder, not a quote.
2. Some eyes shouldn't have SMILE at all
A real share of people who write to me about SMILE turn out to be better served by something else. Very high myopia and thin corneas usually point to ICL; farsightedness or early presbyopia to LASIK or LASEK.
A fixed SMILE price invites you to plan around a procedure your eye may not suit. I'd rather you plan around the exam.
3. What's "included" differs between clinics
One quote includes the exam, drops and every follow-up. Another lists surgery only. The cheaper-looking number is often the less complete one.
The honest SMILE figure comes after the exam. Before that, compare what each quote includes, not only the total at the bottom.
How SMILE fits among the other options is in my SMILE LASIK Korea surgeon's guide. The individual factors that move the number are broken down in SMILE eye surgery cost in Korea.
Why your price here is the local price
At our clinic, international patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. There is no foreigner surcharge, no "package for tourists" with a different price list.
The same doctor examines you, operates and sees you the next day. That isn't only about care — it also means the person quoting you is the person who will carry out what was quoted.
Two things you can check before you trust me: we hold 4.8 stars from 154 Google reviews, and I'm a full member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). Evidence, not boasting.
How do I compare SMILE quotes from different clinics?
Put each quote next to these questions. A clinic that answers all of them clearly is giving you a real number.
| Ask this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the exam fee separate? | Ours is ₩150,000, listed separately |
| Both eyes, or per eye? | A per-eye figure looks half the size |
| Which follow-up visits are included? | The next-day check is essential |
| Who operates — the doctor who examined me? | One doctor, one plan |
| How is an enhancement handled? | SMILE enhancement differs from LASIK |
What decides your SMILE quote
Your SMILE figure is set after the exam, from your prescription, astigmatism, corneal thickness and corneal map. As a rough position it usually sits above standard LASIK and below ICL. The full pre-op exam is ₩150,000. If the exam shows SMILE isn't right for your eye, you won't be quoted for it.

If you're unsure SMILE is worth it over LASIK at all, read SMILE vs LASIK in Korea first. Our fixed fees for the other procedures are on the price page, and the procedure itself is described on our SMILE treatment page. The Korean head office explains how non-insured fees are set on its fee guide.
When the cheaper option is the right one
Sometimes the honest answer to "how much is SMILE?" is "you don't need SMILE."
- Moderate myopia, no contact sports, healthy tear film: LASIK often gives an equally good result at a fixed, published price.
- Very high myopia or thin cornea: ICL is usually the safer route, and SMILE would be the wrong saving.
- Untreated dry eye or changing prescription: no laser yet, whatever the price.
SMILE also has side effects I'll explain in person: temporary dryness, night glare and halos, and a small chance of residual prescription. Results and recovery vary between people.
Budgeting the whole trip, not only the surgery
- At least three nights in Seoul, four recommended: exam, surgery, next-day check, buffer.
- A changeable flight — the exam can change the plan.
- Stop contact lenses first: at least one week for soft lenses, longer for rigid ones.
- We're one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station, about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport.
- Follow-up at home: one-week, one-month and three-month checks with your local eye doctor, using the written record we give you.

Don't pay a deposit yet — get the exam
Don't choose a clinic by the lowest SMILE figure in your inbox. Choose the one whose number you understand.
It doesn't have to be ours. But make sure the person quoting you will be the one who measures your cornea and operates.
Send your prescription, age and travel dates on WhatsApp. If SMILE isn't the right spend for your eyes, I'll tell you plainly, and what I'd choose instead.
I hope to meet you in Seoul.

Frequently asked questions
How much does SMILE LASIK cost in Korea?
We give the exact SMILE figure after your exam, because it depends on your prescription, astigmatism and corneal measurements. As a rough position, it usually sits above standard LASIK and below ICL. The full pre-op exam is ₩150,000.
Why won't clinics quote SMILE by email?
Because an honest SMILE quote needs your corneal thickness, map and tear film, which only an exam can give. A figure sent before that is a guess, and it can change once the measurements are in.
Do foreigners pay more for SMILE in Korea?
Not at our clinic. International patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay, with no foreigner surcharge, and the price is set by your exam, not your passport.
What should a SMILE quote include?
It should state the procedure for both eyes, whether the exam fee is separate, which follow-up visits are covered, what drops are included, and how an enhancement would be handled. If any of those is missing, ask before you pay a deposit.
Is SMILE worth the extra cost over LASIK?
Only if your eyes and life benefit from no flap — contact sports, a tendency to dry eye, or a job where the eye can take a knock. For many people LASIK gives an equally good result, and I'll tell you if that's your case.
What other costs should I budget for besides surgery?
Flights, at least three nights in Seoul (four recommended), local transport, sunglasses and your follow-up checks at home. A changeable flight ticket is worth paying for, because the exam can change the plan.
