Worried that a Korea LASIK recovery program ends the moment you board your flight home, and that you'll be on your own if your eyes feel dry or blurry a week later? Read the sections below before you book the surgery or the flight. You'll learn what a recovery program actually includes, how it changes with each method, what review threads get right and wrong, and what decides the cost. That way you can tell how much care your eyes and your budget really need.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Seoul. I'm an ophthalmology specialist from Catholic Medical Center and Clinical Professor (Cornea & Cataract) at Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital. At Healing Eye, one dedicated doctor stays with you from the exam through surgery and aftercare. International patients pay the same prices as Korean patients, and consultations are interpreted in English.
I'm writing this because many people compare recovery packages by counting the items on the list, when the thing that shapes your recovery most is which method your exam allows.
A Korea LASIK recovery program is the drops, check-ups and care that surround your surgery days. With Clear LASIK or Personal Custom LASIK, the expected return to daily life is one to two days. Perfect Healing LASEK comes with our own 3–5 day recovery-care program, because surface treatment takes longer to heal.
If you'd like to know which kind of recovery your own eyes would need, send a photo of your latest glasses or contact lens prescription on WhatsApp, along with the one question that worries you most about the days after you fly home.
What does a LASIK recovery program actually include?
Strip away the package names and a recovery program has three layers. The US FDA's patient guidance places the first follow-up visit 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
The second layer supports the healing surface. Our price list includes corneal cross-linking and autologous serum as separate items next to the LASIK and LASEK lines. Cross-linking is a treatment that stiffens the collagen of the cornea. Autologous serum is an eye drop made from your own blood serum, used in eye care to support a healing surface. Whether either belongs in your plan depends on your corneal measurements and tear film, and that question gets answered by the exam.
The third layer is what happens once you're home: who you contact, and whether the doctor who operated on you is still involved. That layer has its own section below, because it's the one that keeps travelers up at night.

Methods compared: how recovery differs
| Method | Expected return to daily life | What recovery care centers on |
|---|---|---|
| Clear LASIK | 1–2 days | Next-day check-up, drops, dryness in the first weeks |
| Personal Custom LASIK | 1–2 days | The same, plus night vision and glare, which the design takes into account |
| Perfect Healing LASEK | 3–5 day recovery care | Comfort while the surface layer regrows |
| LASIK/LASEK Revision | Varies by case | Decided after a detailed exam |
The Clear LASIK timeline shows what "one to two days" means in practice. On surgery day your vision starts recovering right away, and some foreign-body feeling or light sensitivity is normal. On day one you have your first check-up and can go about normal indoor activities. By days two and three your vision is mostly stable and light outings are fine. By week one most routines are back, and around month one your vision and cornea enter a stable phase.
Personal Custom LASIK has the same expected return to daily life.
LASEK is different, because the thin surface layer of the cornea has to regrow over the treated area, and that takes several days. Perfect Healing LASEK suits thin corneas and active lifestyles. Its recovery-care program is designed to reduce discomfort and shorten that healing time.
Revision is the one plan I can't sketch in advance. How long it takes and how recovery goes depend on what a detailed exam finds in an eye that has already been treated. If you'd like a longer walk through the first week, see LASIK recovery time, day by day.
Who needs more than the basic recovery plan?
Say you're 47, live in Toronto, and have worn -5.00 D contacts for twenty years. Lately you hold your phone at arm's length to read it, and your contacts feel dry by evening. You've read that LASIK recovery takes a day or two, so you're planning a short trip.
Here's how I'd reason about those eyes. The distance prescription is the part I worry about least. The evening dryness is what I'd want measured first: a tear film that's already unstable tends to make the weeks after surgery harder, and treating it first can matter more than any add-on. If your exam confirms dry eye, our Dry-Eye Clinic works with programs such as IPL and meibomian-gland care, and that may change your timing.
The phone at arm's length is early presbyopia. If you correct only your distance vision, reading glasses will probably come back into your life, and Presbyopic LASIK & LASEK is on our list as an option to discuss. Then there's corneal thickness. If your cornea is on the thin side for your correction, Perfect Healing LASEK comes into the conversation, and your recovery plan grows from a day or two to its 3–5 days of recovery care.
Other findings change the plan too. Large pupils are linked to glare at night, which is one reason Personal Custom LASIK accounts for them at the design stage. A very high prescription may point toward ICL, a lens placed inside the eye that doesn't reshape the cornea. Because it's intraocular surgery, it carries its own risks, such as raised eye pressure, so it needs its own discussion.
What happens after you fly home?
This is the part I'd plan hardest. After LASIK-type surgery, most of what bothers people shows up as dryness or fluctuating vision in the first weeks, which is exactly when you'll be back at work in another country.
Three facts matter here. First, one doctor follows you from the exam through surgery and aftercare, so the person you contact later is the person who measured your eyes. Second, for Personal Custom LASIK, we keep following your progress by video call or messenger after you fly home. Ask about the policy's terms in your consultation before you book.
You can read about revision in LASIK revision surgery in Korea.
There's also preparation on your side. The US CDC's guidance on medical tourism suggests getting copies of your medical records before you return home and arranging follow-up care there. For eye surgery, that means your pre-op measurements, the surgery record and your drop schedule, plus the name of an ophthalmologist near home who will see you for a check.
Risks and side effects to know
In the first days after laser vision correction, a gritty feeling, watering, light sensitivity and fluctuating vision are common. Dryness, and glare or halos around lights at night, can last for weeks to months, and they usually ease as the eye heals. Less often, a leftover prescription or regression means a second treatment comes up later. Infection and inflammation are uncommon, but they need prompt care.
Some eyes should wait or take a different route. That includes a prescription that's still changing, a thin or irregularly shaped cornea or signs of keratoconus, severe dry eye, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. The FDA's page on when LASIK is not right for you lists similar conditions. In those cases I'd stabilize the eye first, or we'd talk about LASEK or ICL instead. The numbers I look at before saying yes are covered in Is LASIK in Korea safe?
If something feels wrong after you're home, don't wait for a scheduled visit. The FDA advises contacting your eye doctor right away if pain is severe, or if your vision or other symptoms get worse instead of better. See a local ophthalmologist or an emergency eye service, bring your surgery records, and message us so your dedicated doctor knows what's happening. How fast someone heals differs from one eye to the next, which is why the recovery plan follows your exam.
What decides the cost of recovery care?
Recovery care usually isn't a separate bill you can compare line by line. Its cost moves with the rest of your plan. The first factor is the method your exam allows. Clear LASIK, Personal Custom LASIK and Perfect Healing LASEK are different plans, and how long aftercare lasts differs between them. The second is add-ons such as corneal cross-linking or autologous serum, if your corneal measurements or tear film call for them.
The third factor is the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately from surgery. The fourth is your days in Seoul and where you stay; our partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu. One thing that doesn't change the figure is where you're from, because international patients pay the same prices as Korean patients. The exact cost is confirmed in a one-to-one consultation after the detailed exam.
If you'd like a figure for your own case before then, ask on WhatsApp what LASIK or LASEK with recovery care would cost for your eyes.
What reviews say about recovery, and what's medically true
Recovery threads tend to repeat a few claims. "I could see the next morning" is often true after LASIK-type surgery, though sharpness can shift for days to weeks while the surface settles. "LASEK hurts for days" has some truth to it: the first few days after surface treatment are usually the uncomfortable stretch, which is why our LASEK comes with a recovery-care program.
"Dry eye goes away in a week" is where threads tend to be too optimistic. For many people dryness lasts weeks, sometimes months, and eyes that were dry before surgery often have more of it afterward. "Recovery packages are an upsell" can't be answered in general. Ask what each item does and why your eyes in particular would need it.
How do the clinic's hours fit your flights?
We're at 470 Gangnam-daero, one minute's walk from Sinnonhyeon Station and about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport. We're open Monday to Thursday 10:00–18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday 10:00–14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and public holidays.
For Clear LASIK, if your exam results allow it, the plan is exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon and a check-up the next day. Since we're closed on Sundays and holidays, make sure that next-day check-up doesn't fall on one. Friday's later hours are worth knowing about if you're arriving after work. How many days you should stay depends on your method and your exam, so confirm it in your consultation before you book the return flight.
When you're ready, send your prescription and the dates you're considering on WhatsApp, and ask the question that's been holding you back, whether that's dryness on the flight home or how many check-ups you'd need. When you come to Gangnam, I'll examine your eyes and recommend the method and the recovery plan that fit them.
Frequently asked questions
Is the recovery care the same for LASIK and LASEK?
No. With Clear LASIK and Personal Custom LASIK, the expected return to daily life is one to two days. Perfect Healing LASEK includes a 3–5 day recovery-care program, because the surface layer of the cornea needs several days to heal.
Do international patients pay more for recovery care?
No. All prices apply equally to local and international patients. What changes the figure is your method, any add-ons your exam calls for, and the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately.
Will the same doctor look after me during recovery?
Yes. One dedicated doctor stays with you from the exam through surgery and aftercare, and consultations are interpreted in English.
Can I go sightseeing the day after Clear LASIK?
Day one after Clear LASIK is for your first check-up and normal indoor activities. Light outings are usually fine from days two to three. Wear sunglasses outdoors and don't rub your eyes.
What if my vision changes years after surgery?
Vision can drift over time, from regression or age-related change. We run a dedicated LASIK/LASEK revision center and a lifetime surgical responsibility policy. Ask about the policy's terms in your consultation, and keep your surgery records.
