Trying to pin down the Korea SMILE Pro price before you commit to a long-haul flight and scarce leave days? The figure is set mostly by which surgery your corneas suit, what the quote covers and how many days you spend in Seoul, more than by the laser's name. At Healing Eye Clinic our SMILE-type procedure is Clear SMILE LASIK (₩2,900,000 for both eyes, ₩2,700,000 with the maximum discount, with the ₩150,000 pre-op exam separate). That price is fixed; what the detailed exam confirms is whether SMILE suits your eyes.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, an ophthalmology specialist trained at the Catholic Medical Center whose field is the cornea, glaucoma and cataract.
If you have two or three quotes open and each uses a different name for what looks like the same surgery, read this before you compare them.
By the end you'll know what sets the cost of SMILE for your eyes, who it suits and who should take another route, how many days to plan in Seoul, and which risks to weigh. That's enough to judge whether a quote fits your eyes as well as your budget.
At Healing Eye, one dedicated surgeon stays with you from the exam through surgery and aftercare. International patients pay the same price as Korean patients, and on-site interpreters for English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese go through your results with you.
I wrote this because many people compare SMILE quotes by platform name, when the question that weighs more on both the bill and the result is whether your eye was a good match for SMILE in the first place.
No SMILE price applies to you until your corneal thickness and shape have been measured, but you can learn today which factors will set yours.
If you have a recent glasses or contact lens prescription, send a photo of it on WhatsApp with the month you hope to travel, and ask what SMILE would cost in your case.
Is SMILE Pro a different surgery from SMILE?
SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction. A femtosecond laser shapes a thin, lens-shaped disc of tissue, the lenticule, inside the cornea, and the surgeon draws it out through a small opening. Taking out that disc changes the cornea's curvature, which is what corrects the prescription. Reinstein and colleagues set out the principle and its clinical outcomes in a 2014 review in Eye and Vision.
SMILE Pro is the name given to a newer generation of laser platform for the same operation. Its main change is a shorter laser time. The lenticule is still created inside the cornea and removed through a small incision. I've gone through the details in what SMILE Pro changes and what it leaves alone. If clinic sites have left you unsure which name means what, how the SMILE, LASIK and Clear labels differ lays them side by side.
On our procedure list this is Clear SMILE LASIK, performed with the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8, so that's the surgery I describe here. When you line up quotes, ask each clinic which operation the figure refers to and which laser platform sits behind it. Two numbers can only be compared when they describe the same operation.
What decides the cost of SMILE for your eyes
Anyone typing “Korea SMILE Pro price” into a search bar is usually hoping for one number. In practice a quote in Seoul is shaped by a few factors, and only one of them is the operation itself.
| Factor | Why it moves the cost |
|---|---|
| Which surgery your exam supports | If thickness or shape rule out SMILE, the plan becomes LASEK or a lens implant, priced as a different procedure |
| What the quote includes | The detailed exam, post-op drops and check-up visits may or may not sit inside one figure |
| Days in Seoul | Hotel nights, flights and leave from work belong to your real cost |
| Follow-up once home | Who you'll see near home, and how you'll reach your surgeon, matters if something changes later |
The first row is the one people underestimate. SMILE takes tissue from inside the cornea, so the exam has to show enough thickness and an even shape. If it doesn't, the plan changes, and the cost changes with it. If the exam points toward a lens, what an EVO ICL quote pays for covers that separate conversation.
The second row is easy to check. Ask whether the detailed exam, post-op drops and check-up visits are inside the figure or listed separately, because two quotes can differ simply in what they bundle. To see how a laser price list is laid out, which row of a Korea laser eye surgery price list is yours walks through it.
One thing doesn't move the number: your passport. International patients here pay the same price as Korean patients. For lodging, the clinic has a partner hotel, the O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu, which you can ask about when you plan your dates.
To get a first read on your own eyes, ask on WhatsApp whether SMILE is likely in your case and attach your prescription. Whether you're a SMILE candidate is confirmed at the detailed exam.
Who is SMILE a good match for, and who should take another route?
SMILE removes tissue from within the cornea, so it needs enough thickness left behind and an even shape. With less disruption at the surface, it tends to bring relatively less dryness, and its structural strength is why active, sporty people often lean toward it.
I don't choose a surgery because it's the one you came asking about. I choose it with you, from your exam data and the way you live. If SMILE isn't right for your eyes, I'll say so plainly and explain what is.
A thin or irregular cornea, or a map that hints at keratoconus, points away from SMILE. LASEK reshapes the surface of the cornea instead, though the first days are usually more uncomfortable and vision settles more slowly. An implantable lens such as ICL sits inside the eye and leaves the cornea untouched. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's assessment of these lenses lists risks such as cataract and raised eye pressure, which is why candidacy for them is checked carefully too.
Say you're 31, around -5.00 D in both eyes with a little astigmatism, your prescription hasn't moved in two years, and you play football on weekends. SMILE would come into the conversation early, provided the thickness leaves a comfortable margin and the map is even. Now change one detail: the map shows the lower cornea steepening. That pattern can be an early sign of keratoconus, and removing tissue could make it worse. At that point I'd stop discussing SMILE and look at whether a lens implant suits you, or whether surgery should wait.
How many days in Seoul should you plan for?
The surgery itself takes about ten minutes for both eyes, and most people are back to daily life within one to two days. The core schedule is 1 night, 2 days: the detailed exam in the morning, surgery in the afternoon, and the check-up the next day, after which flying is allowed. The exam can change the plan, so 2–3 days makes for a more relaxed trip.
Our hours shape that plan. We're open Monday to Thursday 10:00–18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday 10:00–14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. Sundays and public holidays are closed, so if you land on a Saturday night, Sunday becomes a day to sleep off the jet lag. The clinic is a one-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, and directions and hours are also on our English home page.
In the first day or two after SMILE, many people find their vision a little hazy and their eyes gritty or light-sensitive, and this usually eases quickly. Flying is allowed from the next day; cabin air is dry, so keep artificial tears in your hand luggage.
If a parent or partner reads Korean and wants to see how we explain laser vision correction to patients in Korea, send them our Korean Clear SMILE LASIK page.
Risks and side effects to know before you fly
The common effects are temporary: dryness, a gritty feeling, sensitivity to light, and halos or glare around lights at night. For many people these fade over weeks to a few months, and artificial tears help with dryness in the meantime. Less often, the correction lands a little under or over the target, and a further treatment is discussed once the eye has settled. Healing speed and results differ from person to person.
The US Food and Drug Administration's patient guidance on when LASIK is not for you is a self-check worth running, and in my view its points carry over to SMILE. Surgery is usually best postponed or avoided if your prescription changed in the past year, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if a disease or medication slows your healing, if your corneas are thin or irregular, or if you already have significant dry eye. Whether SMILE suits you is settled by the exam in Seoul, not by a prescription photo.
After you're home, use your drops on schedule and don't rub your eyes. Makeup can resume after the next-day check; swimming waits two weeks and contact sports a month. If you notice pain that keeps building, spreading redness, discharge or a sudden drop in vision, see an ophthalmologist near you the same day, then message us on WhatsApp with what you're seeing and when it began.
What to send before you book anything
The consultation on WhatsApp is a consultation, and you can ask about cost before you commit to dates. The most useful thing to send is a photo of any exam printout that shows corneal thickness or a topography map, with one question: how many days should I plan in Seoul for SMILE? When you come to Gangnam, I'll examine your eyes and recommend the method that fits them.
Frequently asked questions
Do international patients pay more for SMILE at Healing Eye Clinic?
No. International patients pay the same price as Korean patients: Clear SMILE LASIK is ₩2,900,000 for both eyes, ₩2,700,000 with the maximum discount, and the ₩150,000 pre-op exam is separate.
Can I get an exact SMILE price before I fly to Seoul?
Yes. Our SMILE procedure, Clear SMILE LASIK, has a fixed price: ₩2,900,000 for both eyes, ₩2,700,000 with the maximum discount, plus the ₩150,000 pre-op exam. What the detailed exam decides is whether SMILE is the surgery you'll have. Before that, you can ask on WhatsApp whether your prescription looks like a SMILE case.
Does SMILE correct astigmatism?
SMILE is generally used for nearsightedness with or without astigmatism, within limits on the amount. Whether your astigmatism falls within what SMILE can treat well is something the exam shows.
Does SMILE hurt?
SMILE is done under numbing eye drops. Most people describe pressure and a brief dimming of vision rather than pain, and some soreness or grittiness for a few hours afterward is common.
What happens to my plan if SMILE isn't right for my eyes?
The conversation moves to LASEK or an implantable lens, depending on your corneal thickness, shape and prescription. Each is a different procedure with its own price, explained once the exam results are in.
