Are you trying to work out the Korea clear LASIK procedure steps in order, so you can tell whether the exam, the surgery and the flight home will all fit into one short trip to Seoul? Read this before you book a flight. By the end you'll know each step from your first message to the departure gate, what decides the cost for your eyes, what reviews get right and wrong about recovery, and which days of the week make the plan work.
I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director of Healing Eye Clinic in Seoul, and "should i do my lasik in Thailand or Korea" is a question I can only half answer from my side of the map.
That should help you pick dates that suit your eyes and your leave.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam. My specialty is the cornea, along with glaucoma and cataract. For Clear SMILE LASIK, one dedicated surgeon stays with you from the exam through aftercare. Japanese, Traditional Chinese and English interpreters are on site, and international patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. We're registered with Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare to treat international patients, and the clinic is a one-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station.
I wrote this because most people plan their trip around the ten-minute surgery. The step that actually decides whether the trip works is the exam on the first morning.
Here's the order. On the first morning you have a detailed exam of around 20 tests, and your surgeon explains the results with an interpreter. Surgery is that afternoon and takes about 10 minutes for both eyes. The check-up is the next day. If your exam allows it, all of that fits into two days. For a less rushed trip, we suggest planning 2–3.
If you're still choosing dates, send your current glasses or contact lens prescription on WhatsApp with the days you're considering, plus the one question about timing that's on your mind.

What are the Clear LASIK steps, from first message to flight home?
For someone flying in from abroad, the Korea clear LASIK procedure steps in order look like this on a calendar.
| Step | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Before you fly | Send your prescription and dates; pause contact lenses for the period confirmed at consultation |
| 2 | Day 1, morning | Detailed exam of around 20 tests; your surgeon explains the results and plan with an interpreter |
| 3 | Day 1, afternoon | Surgery, about 10 minutes for both eyes |
| 5 | Day 2 | Next-day check-up |
| 6 | After you fly | Back to daily life within 1–2 days; follow-up with an eye doctor at home |
The step people skip is the first one. Contact lenses can temporarily change the shape of the cornea, so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises stopping them for a while before the baseline exam. That way the measurements reflect your natural cornea. How long you need depends on the type of lens you wear, so ask at consultation and count those days back from your exam date.
Getting to the clinic is the easier part. It's about 70 minutes from Incheon Airport, and our partner hotel, the O'Cloud Hotel, is in Seocho-gu. If you land the evening before your exam, you come to the morning tests after a night's sleep, not straight off a long-haul flight.
The first morning in the exam room decides the rest of the trip
A good result begins in the exam room, well before surgery day. The detailed exam is around 20 tests. For Clear SMILE LASIK, the ones that matter most are corneal thickness, the topography map of the corneal surface, your tear film, pupil size and a careful measurement of your prescription.
The map is what I'd weigh most heavily. A cornea that steepens toward the bottom can be an early sign of keratoconus, and reshaping that kind of cornea with a laser can make the condition worse. A cornea that's thin for the amount of correction you need is another reason to stop. In either case I'll tell you plainly that Clear SMILE isn't right for your eyes and explain the alternatives, usually LASEK or an implantable lens (ICL).
Once the tests are done, your surgeon goes through the results and the plan with you, with an interpreter, in your own language. If dilating drops are used, near vision usually stays blurry for a few hours, so don't plan to read fine print or drive that day.
What happens during the ten minutes of surgery?
Numbing drops go in first, so most people feel the surgery as pressure more than pain. Then four things happen in sequence. A femtosecond laser shapes a thin, lens-shaped piece of tissue, called a lenticule, inside the cornea, sized to your prescription. The same laser makes one small opening at the edge of the cornea. The lenticule is removed through that opening. With that tissue gone, the curvature of the cornea changes, and that is what corrects myopia and astigmatism.
The technique belongs to the SMILE family of lenticule extraction. A review by Reinstein and colleagues in the journal Eye and Vision describes how this approach reshapes the cornea through a small incision. If the different names on Korean clinic menus confuse you, I've written about what each Clear SMILE LASIK name means.
I've also written separately about how SMILE Pro relates to the same surgery.
If a parent or relative at home is more comfortable reading Korean, they can look through the Korean-language Clear LASIK page of our Seoul clinic while you plan.
How long is recovery before you can fly and work?
Most people are back to daily life within 1–2 days. The first few hours after surgery are usually the least comfortable. Your eyes water, feel scratchy and are sensitive to light, and sleeping through the first evening helps more than anything else.
Vision is often clear enough to get around by the next morning. It can keep shifting a little for several weeks while the cornea settles. Dryness is common in the first weeks too, and cabin air is dry, so keep lubricating drops in your carry-on. The FDA's guidance for after surgery is to avoid rubbing your eyes and to skip swimming, hot tubs and eye makeup for as long as your surgeon advises.
Once you're home, book a visit with a local eye doctor for the weeks after you return, and keep copies of your exam results with you. The U.S. CDC's advice for medical travelers is the same: plan your follow-up care at home before you leave. When you book, ask which documents to take to that appointment.
Risks, and who should wait
Risks and side effects to know
Common and usually temporary: dryness, glare or halos around lights at night, and vision that fluctuates for several weeks. For most people these ease as the eye heals, though the speed differs from person to person.
In general, it's better to wait or choose a different approach if your prescription has changed in the past year, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if your cornea is thin or the topography shows irregularity, or if you have severe dry eye, which is usually treated first. For very high myopia, an implantable lens is often a better fit. It leaves the cornea untouched, but it is surgery inside the eye, and the FDA lists risks such as cataract and raised eye pressure.
LASEK works on the corneal surface and usually means a slower, more uncomfortable first few days.
If something changes after you fly home, see a local ophthalmologist the same day. Warning signs include pain that gets worse instead of better, a sudden drop in vision, or a red eye with discharge. Then message us on WhatsApp describing what you're noticing.
If you've already been told at home that your corneas are thin, send that thickness reading or a photo of the printout on WhatsApp. Ask whether Clear SMILE, LASEK or ICL is the one to plan your trip around. You can also read about our doctors on Healing Eye Clinic's English homepage before you write.
Do the "one-day LASIK" reviews hold up?
Review threads tend to repeat three claims about the timeline. "I could see the next morning" is true for many people, but vision keeps settling for weeks, so the morning after isn't the final result.
"The whole thing takes a day" confuses the surgery with the trip. The surgery takes about 10 minutes, but the exam fills the morning and the next-day check-up is part of the plan.
"My eyes were never dry" does happen. The small-incision method preserves more of the corneal structure and nerves, which makes dryness after surgery relatively less likely. Less likely still doesn't mean never.
What decides the cost for your case?
A figure doesn't mean much until the exam shows which method fits your eyes. The first factor is that method. Clear SMILE LASIK, Custom LASIK, LASEK and ICL are each priced separately. If you're over 40 there's also a presbyopic version of Clear SMILE, a choice I cover in presbyopia surgery cost in Korea.
The second factor is the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately from surgery. The third is your time in Seoul: hotel nights and any buffer day you add. Your passport doesn't change anything, because international patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. If you're lining up quotes from several clinics, how to compare SMILE LASIK quotes in Korea shows which line items to check.
To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost and attach your prescription.

Which days of the week should you plan around?
We're open Monday to Thursday 10:00–18:30, Friday until 21:00 and Saturday 10:00–14:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and public holidays. That last part matters more than people expect, because the check-up the day after surgery has to fall on a day we're open. Surgery on a Saturday would put the check-up on a Sunday. The two-day plan works when surgery is Monday to Friday, and a Friday surgery means a Saturday-morning check-up.
Before you book, check the Korean public holiday calendar for your dates as well.
Say you have five days of leave and a prescription that hasn't changed in a couple of years. You land at Incheon on Wednesday evening and sleep near the clinic. Thursday morning is the exam, and if everything looks clear, surgery is Thursday afternoon. Friday is the check-up and Saturday is your buffer day, so you fly home Saturday evening or Sunday. If Thursday's exam points to a different method, you still have Friday and Saturday to talk the options through before you decide anything.
When you arrive, I'll examine your eyes, go through the results with you and an interpreter, and recommend the method that fits them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit Clear SMILE LASIK into a long weekend?
If your exam allows it, the exam, surgery and next-day check-up fit into two days. We suggest 2–3 days for a less rushed trip. Because we're closed on Sundays and public holidays, plan surgery for a day when the following day is a clinic day.
Do I need to speak Korean for the exam and surgery?
No. Japanese, Traditional Chinese and English interpreters are on site, and your surgeon explains your results and plan with an interpreter in your own language.
Is Clear SMILE LASIK the same as SMILE?
Both remove a lenticule through a small incision. At Healing Eye Clinic, Clear SMILE is performed with the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 femtosecond laser. Which method suits you depends on your exam data.
How long should I stop wearing contact lenses before the exam?
It depends on the type of lens you wear. Lenses can temporarily change the shape of the cornea, which affects the measurements, so ask at consultation and count those days back from your exam date.
Do international patients pay more for Clear LASIK in Korea?
No. International patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. The detailed pre-op exam is charged separately from surgery. For your own figure, ask on WhatsApp and attach your prescription.
What should I do if my eye hurts after I'm back home?
If the pain gets worse instead of better, your vision suddenly drops, or the eye is red with discharge, see a local ophthalmologist the same day. Bring copies of your exam results, then message the clinic describing what you're noticing.
