How long does a Korea EVO ICL recovery program actually hold you in Seoul before you can board the next flight, whether that's home or on to another country? If your onward ticket can still be changed, look at the part about traveling after the check-up before you touch it. What the first 24 hours involve, what the first week asks of you, how many days to book and what can go wrong are all covered, so you can decide whether the surgery fits this trip or the next one.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director of Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, an ophthalmology specialist trained at Catholic Medical Center with cornea, glaucoma and cataract as my fields. For implantable lens (ICL) surgery here, one dedicated surgeon follows you from the measurements to the operation to aftercare. International patients pay the same price as Korean patients, a medical interpreter for English is provided at no extra charge, and we are registered with Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare for international patients and run a lifetime surgical-responsibility system.
What people underestimate is the pressure check. You may see well the next morning, but the pressure inside the eye still has to be confirmed before a long flight, and that takes days.
You can't leave on surgery day, and usually not the next morning either. For ICL, the clinic recommends staying at least two to three days for the exam, the surgery and the follow-up, with one to two days of in-clinic pressure and progress checks before a long-haul flight; your surgeon decides the actual day you leave.
If you're planning around an onward flight, send a photo of your latest prescription and the date you'd like to leave Seoul on WhatsApp, and ask whether that leaves enough room for the pressure checks. The consultation on WhatsApp is free, including questions about prices, the interpreter and your schedule.
What happens in the first 24 hours after EVO ICL?
Expect bright, hazy vision for the first hours, some scratchiness, and, as is standard after lens implants, a check of eye pressure in the hours after surgery. Many people see well enough by the next morning to walk around without glasses.
ICL places a thin collamer lens inside the eye, in front of your own lens, without reshaping the cornea, and it can be removed later if needed. EVO lenses have a small opening in the center, 360 micrometers across, that lets the fluid inside the eye pass through the lens; that's why a laser hole in the iris isn't needed beforehand. The procedure takes about fifteen minutes for both eyes under numbing drops.
The EVO lens received US FDA approval in 2022, which helps if you want to look up its status from home.
The first day is mostly about pressure. After any lens implant, fluid flow inside the eye can be disturbed for a while, by leftover gel from surgery or by inflammation, and the pressure can climb. The FDA lists raised eye pressure among the risks of phakic lenses, and it is the main reason a long flight waits for the follow-up checks.
If you're earlier in the process, ICL surgery in Korea, from first exam to flight lays out the whole route; this page stays with the days after.
Days 2 to 7: what the recovery program asks of you
Vision usually firms up over the first days, and daily life comes back within one to two days. What the first week asks for is mostly restraint: drops on schedule, no rubbing, nothing but clean water near your eyes, and the follow-up visits.
The pattern below is the general one after phakic lens surgery; your surgeon adjusts it at each check.
| Period | Usually fine | Hold off |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Rest indoors, short walks, screens in short bursts | Rubbing, heavy lifting, water splashed into the eyes |
| Days 2–3 | Cafés, museums, subway rides | Pools, saunas, dusty hikes |
| Days 4–7 | Most sightseeing and desk work | Swimming, contact sports, eye makeup |
| After week 1 | Your normal routine, as your surgeon advises | Anything your surgeon has flagged for your eyes |
Post-op drops after ICL are usually an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. Before you go home, enough post-op medication is prescribed to take with you, along with the ingredient information so you can find an alternative locally. If you're crossing time zones, set phone alarms by interval rather than by clock time, so a shifted day doesn't make you skip a dose.
Can you keep traveling after the check-up?
Usually yes, once the pressure checks are done and your surgeon is satisfied. The bigger risks on the road are dry cabin air, dust and running out of drops.
Say you're 27, around -11.00, told at home that your corneas are too thin for laser, and Tokyo is your next stop. I'd plan the exam and surgery early in the week, since the clinic is closed on Sundays and holidays and Saturday hours end at 14:00. The next day brings the first check, then a further day or two in Seoul before the flight.
A short hop to Japan is still a flight with dry cabin air, so keep the drops and artificial tears in your carry-on and use the tears often.
If you're staying in hostels, keep your drops sealed in your own bag rather than on a shared bathroom shelf, and wash your hands before every dose. Before you leave Seoul, look up the name of an eye clinic near where you'll stay next. You will probably never need it, and if your eye turns red and painful at night you won't be searching in a hurry.
If you already know your route, send the next city and its dates on WhatsApp together with your last two prescriptions, and ask how many days in Seoul that route calls for.
How many days to book in Seoul
At least two to three days for the exam, the surgery and the follow-up checks. If the flight after Seoul is long-haul, arrange those days so the pressure checks are finished before you board.
Weekday hours are 10:00 to 18:30 from Monday to Thursday, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and Friday runs late until 21:00. The clinic is one minute's walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, and our partner hotel, O'Cloud Hotel, is in Seocho-gu. How long to stop wearing contact lenses before the exam is confirmed at consultation; ask early, because those days come out of your trip too.
Hours, the address and messenger options are on the Healing Eye Clinic international patient page. There's also a Korean-language ICL page from our Seoul clinic; run it through a translation app if you want a second description of the surgery.
If you're still weighing whether the surgery fits your budget, what the EVO ICL price pays for covers the lens and exam side. Extra nights in Seoul are the part of the total you control, which is one more reason to plan the days carefully.
Toric or Viva lens: does recovery change?
Mostly no, with two additions.
The EVO ICL Toric corrects astigmatism, so it has to sit at a set angle. Follow-up checks confirm that alignment, and if a toric lens rotates, it may need repositioning, which the FDA lists among the reasons phakic lenses sometimes need further surgery. EVO Viva is meant mainly for people from their mid-forties with myopia whose near vision has started to blur; its extended-depth-of-focus optic covers far, middle and near, and getting used to it can take some weeks.
If that's your age group, three checks for ICL over 40 is the page to read next. Which lens and which power you get is decided by the surgeon after the detailed exam, and the lens, the numbers and the surgery day explains what those numbers are.
What could go wrong once you've left Korea?
Risks and side effects to know
Glare and halos around lights at night, dryness, light sensitivity and a mild scratchy feeling are common early on and usually fade over the following weeks, though some people keep a degree of night halo. The FDA's page on phakic lens risks also lists raised eye pressure, inflammation, cataract formation, a gradual loss of the cells lining the back of the cornea, retinal detachment, infection, and the need for another operation to reposition, replace or remove the lens.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology's 2009 technology assessment found phakic lenses effective for moderate to high myopia and named corneal endothelial cell loss and cataract as the long-term issues to monitor.
Who should wait or skip ICL, in general terms: eyes with a shallow anterior chamber or a low endothelial cell count, a history of glaucoma or uveitis, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and a prescription that is still changing. How long glare lasts and how fast vision settles differ from eye to eye, which is why the checks happen before you fly rather than after.
After you leave, severe eye pain, a headache with nausea, a sudden blur or a red eye that worsens can signal a pressure rise or infection and needs an eye doctor that day. Bring the names of your drops and your lens details, then message us on WhatsApp with what was found. In the years after, a yearly check of eye pressure, lens position and endothelial cell count with an ophthalmologist at home is a sensible habit.
A first message doesn't need more than one photo. Send your most recent prescription, or a corneal-thickness printout if a clinic at home gave you one, on WhatsApp with your one question, for example whether your next stop leaves enough days for the checks. The consultation there is free, and the deposit and payment method are settled after it, so ask about those as well.
Once you're in Seoul, the measurements I look at first are your anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell count, since they decide whether an EVO lens suits your eyes at all.
Frequently asked questions
Are both eyes done in the same session?
The procedure takes about fifteen minutes for both eyes, so both are usually treated in one session. If your measurements point another way, raise it at consultation, because a separate day for the second eye adds to your stay.
Does ICL surgery hurt?
Numbing drops are used, so most people feel little pain during the operation. Because the EVO lens has a central opening, no laser hole in the iris is needed, which also keeps discomfort after surgery lighter. A scratchy feeling for the first day or so is common.
Can the lens be taken out if I'm not happy with it?
Yes. ICL is reversible: the lens can be removed or exchanged if needed. Removing it brings your old prescription back, so you would need glasses again, and removal is itself an operation with its own risks.
Can I go swimming or diving later in the trip?
Leave pools, hot springs and diving for a later trip. Water exposure carries an infection risk while the small incisions seal. Ask at your last check in Seoul when your eyes can take water again.
Do I need eye check-ups at home in later years?
Yes. A yearly visit to an ophthalmologist for eye pressure, lens position and endothelial cell count is sensible for anyone with an implantable lens. Keep a record of your lens model and size to show them.
