Trying to map the Korea personal custom LASIK procedure steps in order, because your leave is short and you can't afford a surprise on exam day? Read this before you request the time off. You'll know the order, which exam numbers can stop the plan, what decides the cost, what reviews claim about halos and what recovery asks of you, so you can judge whether custom design fits your eyes and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic. We're an MOHW-registered institution for international patients, with on-site English interpreters, one minute from Sinnonhyeon Station. One dedicated surgeon stays with you from exam to aftercare, whether your results point to Personal Custom LASIK or Clear SMILE LASIK.
I'm writing this because people tend to assume custom means better for every eye, and that assumption can send them toward a design they don't need.
The order runs: detailed exam, aberration mapping, results review with an interpreter, surgery, then follow-up. Standard LASIK corrects your prescription with a standard pattern, while custom design also treats your eye's higher-order aberrations. If your eyes have few of those, I may advise against custom.
For a first message, send your latest prescription on WhatsApp with the number of leave days you have, and ask whether that many days is workable for custom LASIK.
The steps in order, and what each one tells you
Here is the sequence with the result that each step produces.
| Step | What happens | What you learn |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Detailed exam | Corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, tear film, signs of keratoconus | Whether LASIK is an option at all |
| 2. Aberration mapping | Wavefront analyzer and corneal topography measure hundreds of points | How your eye bends light, and the blueprint for the laser |
| 3. Results review | You go through the findings with your surgeon and an interpreter | Custom, standard or a different method |
| 4. Surgery | About ten minutes for both eyes | Vision begins changing the same day |
| 5. Follow-up | A post-op check, then video call or messenger after you fly home | How your eyes are settling |
The US FDA's patient guidance describes what step 4 generally involves: numbing drops, a device that holds the eye steady, a flap made in the cornea, the laser reshaping the tissue beneath it, and the flap laid back in place. It also describes a check within the first 24 to 48 hours. If you'd like to picture the setting, what happens room by room in a Korea LASIK clinic walks through it.
Which exam numbers can stop the plan?
Four results matter most, and none of them appears on your glasses prescription.
Corneal thickness and residual cornea. LASIK removes tissue under a flap, so I need to know how much remains after your correction. If the margin is too small, I won't push ahead.
Pupil size. Large pupils are directly tied to nighttime glare, so they need extra attention at the design stage. They don't rule you out, but they do change what you can expect.
Tear film. A screen-heavy job can already strain this. Severe dry eye means stabilizing your eyes before any surgery.
Higher-order aberrations. Two eyes at -3.00 can focus light onto the retina differently, and this difference affects glare, contrast and night vision. A map with few aberrations is the reason to skip custom design.
Say you edit video ten hours a day, you're at -4.00, and street lights already bother you on the drive home. I'd look at your tear film and pupil size before I looked at any design. A strong tear film and a clear aberration pattern would make custom worth discussing. A weak tear film would move that conversation back, and a flat aberration map would make standard LASIK or LASEK enough. With the same equipment, results can differ according to who reads the data, so ask any surgeon to show you these numbers and explain them.
Who should postpone or skip Personal Custom LASIK?
In short, these cases call for a different plan:
- Severe dry eye, progressing keratoconus, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or a prescription that's still changing. It's better to postpone or stabilize your eyes first.
- A thin cornea or a very high prescription. Compare other methods, including SMILE or an ICL, which doesn't reshape the cornea.
- Little higher-order aberration. Standard LASIK or LASEK may do the job, and not pushing more than you need is our principle.
- Contact sports. The FDA notes that a career or hobby with blows to the face and eyes is worth raising before LASIK.
- Earlier surgery elsewhere. If your vision has declined since, our dedicated revision center would start with a detailed exam to look for the cause.
An ICL carries its own trade-off, since it's a lens placed inside the eye. The FDA lists risks such as cataract and raised eye pressure for this type of implant.
What can go wrong with a custom treatment?
Risks and side effects to know
The American Academy of Ophthalmology lists dry eye, glare and halos among the known LASIK problems. Early dryness and temporary glare are common, and for many people they improve with time.
Less commonly, the eye ends up under- or over-corrected, or the flap heals with wrinkles or irritation. Rare but serious problems include infection and progressive weakening of the cornea. A blow to the eye can also disturb a flap long after surgery.
Custom design can help reduce glare in the dark, but I can't promise that every halo will go away, because pupil size and the state of your eye change what you notice. If something feels wrong after you've flown home, we keep following your progress by video call or messenger. The US CDC also advises planning follow-up care before you travel, so identify an eye doctor near you in advance.
To make your next message more useful, add one line on what bothers you at night, such as halos, starbursts or glare from headlights, and ask on WhatsApp whether that symptom is one custom design can address.
Recovery around a desk job and fixed leave
The usual expectation is a return to daily life in 1 to 2 days, and we typically arrange testing and surgery to finish within a few days. Your exact dates and how long to stop contact lenses beforehand are worth confirming during your consultation, because exam results can shift the schedule.
Count the calendar before you book. The clinic is open until 21:00 on Fridays, closes at 14:00 on Saturdays and stays closed on Sundays and holidays, so a check-up day has to fit those hours. Incheon Airport is about 70 minutes away. For the wider trip, the steps from first message to flight home cover the planning side.
Back at your screen, expect dryness to be the thing you notice. Blink often and use the drops you've been given, and follow your surgeon's advice on when to return to long editing sessions. If a family member who reads Korean wants to compare the alternative, send them our Korean page on Clear LASIK.
What decides the cost of custom LASIK?
The design itself is the main variable, since exam results and the scope of the design change the fee for this surgery. After that come the method you end up with if the exam points elsewhere, and your flights and nights in Seoul. All prices apply equally to local and international patients.
The Healing Eye Clinic English homepage has the price table, and exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after a detailed exam. How to compare LASIK-family quotes can help if you already hold offers from elsewhere. Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, and mention that you're asking about custom design.
What reviews say about custom design and halos
Three claims keep turning up in reviews and forum threads. They're general claims, and none describes a particular clinic's patients.
- "Custom gets rid of night halos." Overstated. It may help reduce them, and pupil size still plays a part.
- "Same prescription, same result." Not accurate. Eyes with identical numbers can have different aberrations.
- "Custom is just an upsell." Sometimes a fair suspicion. An eye with few aberrations doesn't need it, so ask to see your map.

What to send today
On WhatsApp, send the month you can travel and ask what you should bring from your current eye doctor. When you come, we'll review your results together in your own language, with an interpreter, and I'll recommend the method that fits your eyes and your work.
Frequently asked questions
Is personal custom LASIK the same as wavefront LASIK?
They're closely related. Personal Custom LASIK uses a wavefront analyzer with corneal topography to build an aberration map, which then guides the laser design.
Does the custom exam take longer than a standard one?
It can run somewhat longer because aberration measurements are added. The surgery itself takes about ten minutes for both eyes.
Is the surgery painful?
Numbing drops are used before surgery, so most people feel little pain and some pressure during the operation. Some irritation afterward is common in the first hours.
Will I understand my aberration results without Korean?
On-site interpreters work in English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese, so you can go through your aberration results and what custom design involves in your own language before deciding.
Can large pupils rule out custom LASIK?
Not automatically. Large pupils are tied to nighttime glare, so they get closer attention at the design stage and affect what you can reasonably expect after surgery.
