Is there a Korea cataract consultation booking fee you have to pay before anyone has measured your eyes? Asking questions on WhatsApp costs nothing. The detailed eye exam appears as its own charged item on the clinic's price list, and whether a deposit is needed, and how you pay, is settled after your consultation rather than before it.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, and cornea, glaucoma and cataract are my fields. For cataract surgery, the same surgeon handles your consultation, surgery and follow-up, an English interpreter joins your consult at no extra charge, and international patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay.
Send a photo of the eye report from your doctor at home on WhatsApp, with which eye was flagged and the months you could travel. The consultation there is free, and you can ask exactly what would be charged before you commit to a flight.
Does the free consultation include the eye exam?
The pre-exam consultation is free, and the clinic's doctor pages describe it as the step that confirms candidacy, cost and schedule.
Many people assume the report from their ophthalmologist at home replaces that exam. It tells me there is a cataract and roughly how much it affects your vision, which is useful. The power of the new lens, though, is calculated from measurements of your eye's length and corneal curvature taken shortly before surgery, on the devices the surgeon plans with. That's why the detailed exam happens in Seoul, even when your home report is thorough.
If you'd like to see what the free part covers step by step, there's a separate post on what happens in a free eye surgery consultation in Korea.
Is a booking fee the same as a surgery deposit?
Whether a deposit is needed, and which payment method you use, is decided after your consultation. If that's the one thing you need settled before you buy tickets, put it in your first WhatsApp message.
A second belief worth correcting: paying something online does not lock in a lens. The lens is chosen after the exam, from your measurements and the way you use your eyes. Choosing it before anyone has measured your eye would be guesswork.
What decides the cost of cataract surgery for your eyes
Cataract pricing on the clinic's list is per eye, and that alone surprises people who are used to LASIK prices quoted for both eyes. Four other things move the number.
- The lens type. A monofocal lens sets one focus distance, usually far, so you will likely still need reading glasses. Premium multifocal lenses such as LISA tri or Synergy aim to cover near and far as well, and they sit higher on the list. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's overview of lens implants describes these families and who each one tends to suit.
- Astigmatism. If your cornea has meaningful astigmatism, a toric version of the lens may be suggested, and toric versions are listed separately.
- Lens power. For a few lenses, a very strong power is priced as its own line, which only the exam can tell you about.
- One eye or both, and the days in Seoul. The detailed exam is also billed separately, and your hotel nights depend on how many eyes are done on this trip.
Say you're 58, you had LASIK in your thirties, a cataract has been found in your right eye, and you'd like to rely less on reading glasses. Earlier LASIK changes the shape of the cornea, which makes the lens power calculation harder, so any record of your prescription before LASIK is worth digging out. Some multifocal designs are also more sensitive to a cornea that has been reshaped, so the lens you hoped for may not be the one the measurements support. That's why a firm figure for your case only comes after the exam, and why the cataract cost factors post goes into each lens family in more depth.
The price table itself is on Healing Eye Clinic's English homepage. For your own figure, ask on WhatsApp what your case would cost per eye, and attach a photo of your home report and any LASIK records.
Do international patients pay more, or pay for the interpreter?
No on both counts. All prices on the list apply equally to local and international patients, and an English interpreter joins your consultation at no extra charge, so the explanation of your results and lens options happens in your language.
What can go wrong after cataract surgery, and after you fly home?
Risks and side effects to know
The US National Eye Institute says the eye may feel itchy or sensitive at first and usually feels better after one or two days, and that most people are completely healed eight weeks after surgery. It lists the risks as swelling, bleeding or infection, vision loss or double vision, unusual changes in eye pressure, retinal detachment, and secondary cataract, a clouding of the lens capsule that can appear months or years later. How quickly your own eye settles can differ from these averages.
As general medicine, surgery is usually postponed when there is an active infection or inflammation in or around the eye, when other conditions such as diabetes are poorly controlled, or when the surgeon needs more information about glaucoma or the retina first. Tell the clinic about any eye drops you use and any past eye surgery before you book.
Ask in your first message how check-ins work from your country for the weeks after surgery, and book a visit with your own eye doctor for after you return. Sudden pain, a sharp drop in vision, or new flashes and a curtain over your vision need urgent local care the same day.

Booking from abroad: what to send, in what order
Start with the free questions on WhatsApp: your home report, which eye, rough dates, and whether you've had LASIK. Next, ask what the exam charge is and whether a deposit applies to your case. Pick days only after that, and work around the clinic's hours: Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:30, Friday until 21:00, Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, closed Sundays and public holidays, with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00.
If both eyes need surgery, the National Eye Institute notes that each eye is usually done at a separate time, about a month apart, which changes whether you plan one trip or two. The post on how long to stay in Korea for cataract surgery walks through those days. If you're arranging this for a mother or father, the companion's guide to cataract surgery in Korea for parents covers the travel side.
Your first WhatsApp message can be a single photo of your eye report from home, with which eye was flagged and one question that decides your booking, such as whether the second eye could be done on the same trip, or what is charged before surgery. The consultation there is free. On exam day, the measurements that set your lens power come first, and the conversation about lenses and cost follows those numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is the lens chosen before I arrive in Seoul?
No. The lens is chosen after the detailed exam, because its power is calculated from measurements of your eye taken before surgery. You can still ask on WhatsApp which lens families are worth reading about for your situation.
I had LASIK years ago. What should I bring?
Bring any record of your prescription before LASIK and the operation notes if you have them. Earlier corneal surgery makes lens power harder to calculate, so these records are useful when your lens is planned.
Can I correct presbyopia at the same time as my cataract?
Yes, that is an option on the clinic's menu. Premium multifocal lenses can correct presbyopia during cataract surgery to reduce reliance on reading glasses. Whether your eye suits one depends on the exam, including astigmatism and the health of the retina.
What should I bring to the exam?
Your glasses, a list of every eye drop and medicine you use, your home eye report, and records of any past eye surgery. If you wear contact lenses, ask how long to leave them out beforehand, since lenses can change corneal measurements.
How long does the surgery itself take?
About 15 to 20 minutes per eye. Most of a surgery day goes on preparation and the short rest afterward, not the operation.
