Watched a Korea Clear LASIK procedure steps video and still can't tell whether those ten minutes are meant for your eyes, especially after a surgeon at home called your corneas thin? Read this before you price a flight. You'll know the steps in order, what the footage leaves out, what decides the cost, what reviews get wrong and how recovery runs, so you can tell whether this surgery fits your eyes and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, Medical Director at Healing Eye Clinic in Gangnam, and the cornea is part of my specialty. Here, Clear SMILE LASIK, the surgery many people search as Clear LASIK, comes with one dedicated surgeon from exam to aftercare, on-site English interpreters and the same prices for local and international patients.
I'm writing this because a video makes the operation look like the whole decision, when most of the decision sits in the exam before it.
Clear SMILE LASIK takes about ten minutes for both eyes: a laser shapes a thin lenticule inside the cornea, makes one small incision, and the lenticule comes out through it. If your cornea is thin or irregular, I'll say clearly that it isn't right for you and explain the alternatives.
If a surgeon at home has already given you a number, send a photo of that exam printout on WhatsApp and ask one thing: is my corneal thickness a problem for Clear SMILE LASIK?
The surgery in five steps
You won't find surgery footage on this page, so here is the order in words.
- Numbing drops. Surgery on the cornea is generally done under anesthetic eye drops, so expect pressure more than pain.
- One small incision. The same laser makes a small opening at the edge.
- The lenticule comes out. Removing it changes the curve of the cornea, which corrects myopia and astigmatism.
The 2014 review by Reinstein and colleagues in Eye and Vision describes this same basic sequence for small incision lenticule extraction, if you'd like to read the medical version.
Why can't a video tell you if you're a candidate?
A Korea Clear LASIK procedure steps video is usually filmed on an eye that has already been cleared for surgery. On camera, a cornea with room to spare and a cornea with very little look the same.
The things that matter are measurements. Corneal thickness tells me how much tissue would remain after the lenticule is taken out. Topography maps the shape of the front surface, and a cornea that steepens toward the bottom can be an early sign of keratoconus, a condition that laser correction can make worse. That map can matter more than your prescription, which is why I tell people that a good result begins in the exam room and never on surgery day.
Say you're at -7.50 with mild astigmatism, your surgeon at home called your corneas thin, and you've watched every video you could find. I wouldn't start with the laser. I'd start with your thickness and your map. If the shape looks irregular or the tissue margin looks small, I would talk about LASEK or an ICL instead.
Those alternatives have their own costs to your body. LASEK generally means a slower, more uncomfortable first few days. An ICL leaves the cornea unshaped but places a lens inside the eye, and the US FDA lists risks such as cataract and raised eye pressure for that kind of implant.
Who should wait or skip it?
In short, these are the situations where I would slow down or say no:
- Your cornea is thin, or topography shows irregularity or signs of keratoconus. LASEK or ICL may be safer.
- Your myopia is very high. An implantable lens may suit you better.
- Your prescription is still changing. I look for about a year of stability.
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding. This is a reason to postpone.
- Your dry eye is severe. We may treat that first.
The FDA's page on when LASIK isn't for you raises similar cautions about an unstable prescription, pregnancy and thin corneas. That page is written about LASIK, though the reasoning carries over to any laser that removes corneal tissue.
If you've already had surgery elsewhere and your vision has declined, that's a different conversation, and we run a dedicated revision center for it. If a cataract is part of your picture, lens surgery becomes the topic, and what moves the price of a multifocal lens implant is worth reading separately.
What can go wrong, and who helps once you're home?
Risks and side effects to know
Some foreign-body feeling and light sensitivity on surgery day is normal. Dryness and some glare or halos at night are common in the early period and usually ease with time, though not at the same speed for everyone.
Less often, the correction comes out under or over target, or the prescription drifts later. Any surgery on the eye carries these possibilities, and your own risk comes from your own measurements.
Once you're home, you can check in with us by email or video call, and if you need local care we provide a referral letter for your eye doctor. The US CDC's medical tourism guidance advises arranging follow-up care before you travel, so find out now which ophthalmologist near you would see you.
Before you message, photograph your last two prescriptions, ideally a year or more apart, and ask on WhatsApp which of the limits above applies to your eyes.
Recovery after a short trip to Seoul
If your exam results allow it, the exam, surgery and next-day check-up fit into two days, with the exam in the morning and surgery in the afternoon. Exam results can change that plan, and we suggest 2 to 3 days for a more relaxed trip.
| When | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Surgery day | Vision starts recovering; some foreign-body feeling or light sensitivity |
| Day 1 | First check-up; normal indoor activities |
| Days 2–3 | Vision mostly stable; light outings |
| Week 1 | Most daily routines are back, following your surgeon's advice |
| Month 1 | Vision and cornea enter a stable phase |
One calendar detail is easy to miss. We're closed on Sundays and holidays, so a Saturday surgery has no next-day visit available at the clinic. Choose your exam day with the check-up in mind. How long to stop wearing contact lenses beforehand is something to confirm during your consultation. The clinic is a minute's walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, and our partner hotel is O'Cloud Hotel in Seocho-gu.
If a parent or sibling who reads Korean is helping you decide, they can read our Korean page on Clear LASIK.
What decides the cost of Clear SMILE LASIK?
Four things move your total. The first is the method your exam points to, since Clear SMILE LASIK, its presbyopic version, LASEK and ICL are priced separately. The second is the detailed pre-op exam, which is charged separately. The third is your days in Seoul, including flights and hotel nights. The fourth is any care you arrange with an eye doctor at home.
The Healing Eye Clinic English homepage carries the full price table, and exact costs are confirmed in a 1:1 consultation after the detailed exam. If you're holding several offers, how to compare SMILE LASIK quotes will help you check that they cover the same things. For your own figure, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case.
What reviews get right and wrong
Comment threads under procedure clips tend to repeat a few claims. These are general claims and don't describe any one clinic's patients.
- "It only took ten minutes." Roughly true for the operation itself. It leaves out the exam and the weeks of settling afterward.
- "I was fine the next day." Partly true. Normal indoor activity on day 1 is typical, while the cornea takes about a month to enter a stable phase.
- "Anyone can get it." False, as the list above shows.
- "A faster laser means a different surgery." Laser time isn't the whole story, as how a faster laser fits the same underlying surgery explains.

Your next message
Send your possible travel dates on WhatsApp and ask whether they leave room for a check-up the day after surgery. When you come, I'll go through your results with you and an interpreter, then recommend the method that fits your eyes and your life.
Frequently asked questions
Is Clear SMILE different from SMILE?
Both remove a lenticule through a small incision. At Healing Eye, Clear SMILE is performed with the Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 laser. Which method suits you is decided from your exam data.
Does Clear SMILE LASIK hurt?
Numbing eye drops are generally used, so most people describe pressure more than pain during surgery. Some foreign-body feeling and light sensitivity on surgery day is normal.
Can I have the exam and surgery without speaking Korean?
Yes. English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese interpreters are on site, and everything from the exam to aftercare is explained in your language.
Do foreigners pay more for the surgery?
No. International patients pay exactly what Korean patients pay. The detailed pre-op exam is charged separately for everyone.
Where can I see the doctor explain vision correction on video?
Our director explains vision correction on camera on the clinic's YouTube channel, which is linked from the English homepage. Those explanations are general and can't assess your own eyes.
